Well, that didn’t last long.

Star Trek into Darkness ended with a declaration that now, at last, after two movies, the Enterprise was finally going to embark on its five-year mission, just like the starship in the original 1960s TV series. This morning, the teaser for the next movie arrived — and practically the first thing it does is destroy the ship:

Note the Beastie Boys’ ‘Sabotage’, which I believe is the same tune that young Kirk was blaring when he stole his stepfather’s (actually his father’s) car in the 2009 film.

Note also the oppressively heavy use of teal and orange in the title cards.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Enterprise destroyed in a movie’s trailer, of course — but it looks like a first-act development in the new film, whereas in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock it came much later and was thus more of a spoiler:

Meanwhile, we also have our first public trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, in which an ancient mutant claims that he was the inspiration for some deities who aren’t worshipped that much any more, like Ra, as well as some deities who are still quite central to some of the world’s major religions, like Krishna and Yahweh:

I don’t have much to say about this that I didn’t already say in a post I wrote back in July, when an earlier trailer was shown to the fans at Comic Con.

Naturally, both of these films are connected on some level to the new Star Wars movie that opens on Thursday. Star Trek Beyond is produced by JJ Abrams, who directed the new Star Wars movie, while the titular villain in X-Men: Apocalypse is played by Oscar Isaac, who plays X-wing pilot Poe Dameron in the new Star Wars movie.

So expect to see both of these trailers on the big screen very soon.
