Last year, I noted that two Bible movies were being filmed in northern Ontario.

One of those films — Joseph & Mary, starring Kevin Sorbo as the titular carpenter and Lara Jean Chorostecki as his bride — comes to DVD next week.

And today I got a press release for the other film: Peter: The Redemption, which stars John Rhys-Davies as the apostle Peter and Stephen Baldwin as the emperor Nero.

Here is the press release for the film, which comes to DVD August 2:

(Los Angeles, CA) – Embark on an inspirational journey of faith in the spellbinding biblical epic starring Emmy® nominated actor John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings franchise, Shogun, Indiana Jones franchise) and Stephen Baldwin (God’s Club, Faith of Our Fathers), Peter – The Redemption, arriving on DVD and Digital HD August 2 from Cinedigm (NASDAQ: CIDM). The moving faith-based film artfully retells the biblical narrative of Apostle Peter during the first Christian persecution. Also starring Steve Byers (“Smallville,” “The Man From High Castle”), the film was celebrated by The Dove Foundation and was awarded their “Faith Friendly Seal for Ages 12+.”

Directed by Leif Bristow (Joseph & Mary) and written by John Patus (Left Behind), Peter – The Redemption follows Peter (Rhys-Davies) as he is tormented by his denial of Christ. Having spent his life attempting to atone for his failures, Peter’s true devotion as a witness for the Lord is tested yet again as he faces certain death at the hand of the cruel Roman Emperor Nero (Baldwin). Will he falter again and let his weakness betray him? Or will he rise up triumphant in his final moment?

Two of the film’s supporting characters are Martinian and Processus, a couple of soldiers who, according to tradition, became Christian while guarding Peter and were subsequently martyred. This tradition was also dramatized in Apostle Peter and the Last Supper, a film starring Robert Loggia as Peter that came out in 2012.

Rhys-Davies, of course, has appeared in multiple films with a biblical hook, including 1978’s The Nativity (in which he played someone named Nestor), 1981’s Peter and Paul (Silas), 2006’s One Night with the King (Mordechai), 2014’s Saul: The Journey to Damascus (Caiaphas) and the two Indiana Jones films that featured biblical relics (1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark and 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade).

I also interviewed Rhys-Davies two years ago on the Morocco set of Killing Jesus, in which Rhys-Davies played the high priest Caiaphas’s father-in-law Annas.

Leif Bristow produced Saul: The Journey to Damascus and Joseph & Mary, but Peter: The Redemption is the first Bible film he has directed.

You can watch a trailer for the film at the IMDb. The DVD cover art is below:
