Regular readers of this blog will know that a movie about Mary Magdalene is due to start shooting soon, with Rooney Mara as Mary Magdalene, Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter and Tahar Rahim as Judas. The film is being directed by Garth Davis, whose only previous feature film is a movie that hasn’t actually come out yet: Lion, an awards-season contender that also features Mara in its cast.

Today we finally have our first look at Lion, via a trailer posted by USA Today. The film is based on the true story of an Indian boy who fell asleep on a train and ended up in Calcutta, over 900 miles from his village; years later, as a grown man (played by Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel), he uses Google Earth to find his family.

Nicole Kidman and David Wenham play a married couple who adopt the boy (whose name is Saroo) and raise him in Australia, while Mara plays his girlfriend.

Here is the trailer:

The film premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, and will get a regular release on November 25. Naturally, I’ll be following the interviews with Davis and Mara to see if any new info about Mary Magdalene comes along, but as a fan of Google Maps etc., I think Lion looks quite interesting in its own right.
