Is Doctor Strange the best Marvel Cinematic Universe movie yet? October 23, 2016

Variety magazine’s chief film critic has seen Doctor Strange, and he calls it “Marvel’s most satisfying entry since ‘Spider-Man 2’ ”. That’s high praise, considering Spider-Man 2 came out four years before Iron Man, and thus four years before the invention of what we now know as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Other critics have been a little more reserved with their praise — IndieWIRE merely called this film “the most exciting addition to [Marvel’s] ever-expanding universe since ‘The Avengers,’ ” which was four years and eight movies ago — but they’ve been positive all the same: the film is still 100% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes!

This makes me happy, as the film’s director, Scott Derrickson, is a friend of mine and a hardcore cinephile who also happens to be quite open about his Christianity.

I first met Scott at a film-themed Regent College conference in 2003 — where he thanked me for including a clip from Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru in my presentation, because it’s his favorite film of all time — and I interviewed him in 2005, shortly before his theatrical directorial debut The Exorcism of Emily Rose came out.

Since then, he has directed other horror films like Sinister and Deliver Us from Evil, and now he’s been given a chance to explore supernatural themes in a big-budget comic-book movie — and I’m glad to hear that critics like what they see!

I won’t be able to see the film for myself until the day before it opens, but here’s a clip that gives us a taste of how the film approaches its supernatural subject matter:

And here’s a taste of the kind of special-effects battles we’ll get to see:

The film opens November 4 (the same day as Hacksaw Ridge). I can’t wait to see it.
