A movie about the space race nearly beat Star Wars at the box office this week.

Hidden Figures, which tells the true story of three African-American women whose mathematical and scientific prowess was key to NASA’s success in the early 1960s, grossed an estimated $21.8 million between Thursday and Sunday nights.

That was nearly tied with Rogue One, which earned $22 million this week — though Hidden Figures could pull ahead when the final figures come out tomorrow.

Hidden Figures went into wide release this weekend after opening in limited release on Christmas Day. The film has earned a total of $24.8 million to date.

Rogue One, for its part, has earned $477.3 million in North America after four weeks, which makes it the eighth-highest grossing film of all time in North America.

Rogue One has earned another $437.1 million overseas and $914.4 million worldwide. It currently ranks 88th overseas and 41st worldwide on the all-time charts.

Two other films didn’t do so well in wide release this week.

Underworld: Blood Wars landed in fourth place with $13.1 million — by far the lowest opening of any film in the Underworld series. (The four previous films, released between 2003 and 2012, all opened to over $20 million.)

And A Monster Calls — about an imaginary monster that helps a boy to cope with bullies at school and his mother’s terminal illness — landed outside the top ten, in 13th place, with $2 million after expanding from four to 1,523 theatres.
