The Fast and the Furious franchise set some new records at the box office this week.

The Fate of the Furious — the eighth installment in the 16-year-old series — grossed an estimated $532.5 million around the world this weekend, thereby breaking the record set two years ago by Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($529 million).

Of the new film’s global haul, $432.3 million came from overseas — far surpassing the foreign record set by Jurassic World ($316.7 million) — and $100.2 million came from North America, which is hardly a record (the film ranks 42nd among domestic openings, well behind Furious 7’s $147.2 million) but is still pretty good.

The only other new film in the top ten this week was Gifted, which stars Chris Evans as a man who gets into a custody battle with his mathematically talented niece’s grandmother. That film, which had a limited release last week, expanded to 1,146 theatres this week and landed in sixth place with $3 million.

Two “faith-based” films did well at the box office this Easter weekend, too.

The Case for Christ, which cracked the top ten when it opened in 1,174 theatres last week, had a slight expansion to 1,386 theatres this week and landed in ninth place with $2.72 million, thereby raising its domestic cume to $8.4 million.

Meanwhile, The Shack landed in 14th place with $700,000 in its seventh week.

The Shack had the fourth-best first and second weeks of any “faith-based” film, and, if the estimates hold, this week it will have the eighth-best seventh weekend:

  • 2004 — The Passion of the Christ — $15.2 million
  • 2015 — War Room — $1.9 million
  • 2014 — God’s Not Dead — $1.8 million

  • 2017 — The Shack — $700,000
  • 2006 — Facing the Giants — $674,945
  • 2016 — Miracles from Heaven — $536,864

The Shack has earned $56.1 million after forty-five days, and thus still ranks seventh among “faith-based” films in terms of total North American gross…

…and sixth worldwide:

  • 2004 — The Passion of the Christ — $370.8 + 241.1 = 611.9 million
  • 2014 — Heaven Is for Real — $91.4 + 9.9 = 101.3 million
  • 2016 — Miracles from Heaven — $61.7 + 12.2 = 73.9 million
  • 2015 — War Room — $67.8 + 5.5 = 73.3 million
  • 2014 — Son of God — $59.7 + 11.1 = 70.8 million
  • 2017 — The Shack — $56.1 + 12.0 = 68.1 million
  • 2014 — God’s Not Dead — $60.8 + 3.9 = 64.7 million
  • 2011 — Soul Surfer — $43.9 + 3.2 = 47.1 million
  • 2006 — The Nativity Story — $37.6 + 8.8 = 46.4 million
  • 2016 — Risen — $36.9 + 9.2 = 46.1 million

1. The foreign-gross figures at Box Office Mojo are incomplete and sometimes out of date. In some cases, a movie’s summary page will list no foreign grosses at all, but clicking on the “foreign” button will produce a list of grosses from individual countries. And sometimes, when a film does have a figure that sums up the film’s foreign grosses, that figure is less up-to-date than the information for the individual countries. So, I have clicked on the “foreign” buttons for the top 50 “faith-based” films and, when the “foreign” figure is older than the figures for the individual countries, I have tallied the foreign figures myself. But the stats listed here all rely on figures that come from Box Office Mojo, and could thus still be incomplete.
