The Arts & Faith Top 100 … or 134 …

The Arts & Faith Top 100 … or 134 … November 7, 2005

There were 100 films on last year‘s Arts & Faith Top 100 Spiritually Significant Films list. And there are 100 films on this year‘s Arts & Faith Top 100 Spiritually Significant Films list. But, by my hasty count, there are only 66 films on both lists.

What changed? Partly the methodology by which the films were selected and voted upon; this year’s list even ranks the films. Partly also the composition of the group that voted upon these films (e.g. this person says he stayed out of this year’s selection process because he didn’t know what was meant by the term “spiritually significant” — and this person’s absence may be one of the reasons why the films of Peter Weir vanished from the list).

FWIW, by my hasty count, I have seen between 91 and 93 of the films on last year’s list — you know how some titles sound so familiar you think you saw them even though you might not have? — and I have seen between 79 and 83 of the films on this year’s list. (This year’s list also includes one famous film that I have never seen, but I have read the book on which it was based.)
