Being a bit more like Thumper…

shhhhh!

A week or so ago my Rabbi sent a newsletter about "being like Thumper".You know,"If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."I've been thinking a bit about it lately, especially in light of my [forever ongoing] legal drama. I've been thinking about the posts I've written. I've been honest, but I haven't always been kind. Is it really harmful to say the truth? I mean, is it so bad? Surely telling the truth, even if unkind, isn't a bad thing? Isn't honesty a … [Read more...]

Hey Convert – I want to Speak with You

following_ruth

I am strongly interested in why people choose the faiths that they choose. Why do some stay with their birth faith, while others leave it? Why do some choose no faith at all (not necessarily atheism or agnosticism, but nothing), while others convert? These are the questions that I want to answer. So far, I have scheduled two interviews for this blog. One converted from one branch of Christianity to another, and the other went from fundamentalist/Evangelical Christianity to Atheism. If … [Read more...]

Faith and Feminism

When I was younger, feminism was a bad word. It was, as my friend put it, "up there with Satan and communism"on the list of very bad things. It was a force to be reckoned with, the driving force behind the ills in society (like homosexuality, lack of prayer in schools, school shootings, etc.) That's right, feminism was the straw that broke the world...or somethign. ¬†My journey from conservative Christian to liberal Jew(ess?) has been a natural progression. It has opened my eyes and in the end … [Read more...]

So, I have discovered that when you¬†formally make an announcement that you're converting to Judaism, it angers your friends who are fundamentalist/evangelical/not-practicing-but-still Christian. It is apparently more stressful for them to hear that you're rejecting Jesus-as-Messiah than to have you not believe in anything at all.But I'll save that for another post, eh?Right now, I want to talk about leaving Christianity. I was approached by a friend who says I'll soon be a part of … [Read more...]

One “Convert’s” Story – Christian Pastor to Jewish Rabbi

lynnvintage_edited

I really enjoyed this youtube video. The speaker accurately describes the slow process from one point to another that conversion involves. It's a process that changes the mind, heart, and soul. What happens is that small truths are unveiled, one by one, until the old faith is no longer home. For me, is started with questioning when I was young. Logically, some things didn't add up. And in practice, things didn't add up. My heart was also elsewhere. It has taken a decade of very slow learning … [Read more...]
