Shame on the Homophobic Moral Cowards at Destiny Image Who Just Ripped Off Brandan Robertson

Brandan Robertson is my friend. He interviewed me several times at the Wild Goose Festival. The world of faith and hope is lucky to have this brilliant, kind lovey refugee from Moody Bible Institute. Now he's been screwed by the evangelical homophobic cowards. To hell with them. They put marketing above honor. A Christian book publisher has scrapped an author’s book deal – after he came out as queer. Evangelical writer Brandan Robertson had signed a deal last year for Destiny Image to publish hi … [Read more...]

If I Was Still an Evangelical, I’d Want to Be Tony Kriz (Blessed be Tony!)

No, I don't write books about God like Tony does. And I'm persona non grata on the Evangelical circuit where Tony thrives... But I like Tony--lots-- and I'm rooting for his new book and him too. Here's an excerpt.Blessed Are Those Who MournAn Excerpt from ALOOF: Figuring Out Life with a GOD Who HIDES By Tony KrizWe religious folks work very hard to try and conjure up God’s presence. We will do about anything we can to infuse enough God-feeling into an event to get people to show up. W … [Read more...]

Dear Patheos Reader: If You Are Running an “Ad Block” While Reading This You Are Stealing From Writers Like Me

Once upon a time people who read books and articles and listened to music and watched movies paid for their entertainment and learning experiences. Then they--we--got used to free art, writing, music and films. The Internet made this "free" stuff possible. I like the Internet. But thieving is uncool. Mea Culpa! I've done my share on online thieving. But that was before I thought about it. No, I'm not talking morality here. I'm talking selfish interest. See, I want there to be new music, book … [Read more...]

The Religious-Right’s Genius For Picking “Winners” : Are the New Atheists Paying Evangelical leaders like Franklin Graham & Mike Huckabee To Make Jesus Look Stupid?

So here's my question: Are the so-called New Atheists paying evangelical leaders like Franklin Graham, Mike Huckabee and D. Michael Lindsay to make Jesus look stupid? Or as I write in my new book WHY I AM AN ATHEIST WHO BELIEVES IN GOD: How to give love, create beauty and find peace (Chapter 9, page, 45): Sam likes to call me out of the blue and casually mention the latest dumb stunt perpetrated by the Religious Right, the Roman Catholic bishops or the Republican Party, as if I have anything to … [Read more...]

We’d rather shop than live…

We’re living in an acquisitive capitalist society that is fundamentally anti-family and fundamentally uncomfortable with just enjoying being human. We’d rather shop than live, acquire than love and stare into a screen than hold each other. The pressure parents put on kids of seventeen, eighteen and nineteen to get into the “right schools” is stressful and cruel. So please forgive me while I preach a little about the joy of children and grandchildren, because plenty of sensible people will tell yo … [Read more...]

The Only Hope for 2015– freeing us from the anguish of mortality

I say the Nicene Creed. I say the words “I believe” this and that. I say these words in good conscience, because saying I believe in God is not the same as saying I know what those words mean. I don’t. Words fall short. I don’t know what words such as “Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father” mean. Then again I don’t know what the words “I love you, Genie” mean either. I say those words with all sincerity to my wife of forty four years, too … [Read more...]
