To Some Atheists and Christians Alike the Phrase “I’m an atheist who believes in God” is ‘Illogical’ and ‘Impossible’ because they are Narrow-Minded Literalists

Why do you think so many atheists seem so evangelistic? They even sometimes speak of their moment of “de-conversion” as a flip-side to the so-called born again experience. If life teaches us anything it's that certainty is overrated. The real life-lessons aren't found in intellectual theories much less in theology, but in seeing life through the lens of those we love most. For instance, I actually experienced brief and perfect instants when death lost its sting.Being with my granddaughter … [Read more...]

Ironically this authentic vibrant refuge was across the street from the hate factory “church” Mars Hill Church

Last night I sang children’s songs with a group of children and adults with Intellectual disability with significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits. In other words: I was in a real church helping outcasts. Ironically this authentic vibrant refuge was across the street from the hate factory “church” Mars Hill Church, that until recently was led by Mark Driscoll. We were gathered at the Open Gathering Church. Some of us were in wheelchairs and electric carts. The service reminded me o … [Read more...]

The future of the meta-universe Church is not going to be about more or less entertainment, rock bands or cool hip young leaders but about openly embracing doubt

What’s needed to save the dwindling Church is a new paradigm: the embrace of atheism as the true religion and religion as the true atheism. Like box stores, the trend in churches is a few get huge while the rest slowly fade away. Progressive Christians and fundamentalists seem to agree when they look for causes of church attendance decline. They parse the details of how church is “done” related to both theology and method. Here's my wife Genie when she was 18 with our first child Jessica Over lunch today, my wife Genie told me that looking back at the time when we were living with my family at L’Abri in Switzerland in the 1970s, she feels especially grateful to my parents. Who is actually following Jesus: fundamentalist Christians rejecting gay men and lesbians’ right to marry, or atheist humanists treating men and women with love and dignity?

Who is actually following Jesus: fundamentalist Christians rejecting gay men and lesbians’ right to marry, or atheist humanists treating men and women with love and dignity? Fact-based, enlightened atheists sometimes treat people like shit, and delusional fundamentalists sometimes treat people with compassion in spite of their harsh theology. Labels don’t mean anything. Who cares about labels when someone is slapping you in the face? Who cares about labels when someone is saving you from dro … [Read more...]
