Why This Atheist Who Believes in God — Says the Nicene Creed and Sort of Means It

I say the Nicene Creed. I say the words “I believe” this and that. I say these words in good conscience, because saying I believe in God is not the same as saying I know what those words mean. I don’t. Words fall short. I don’t know what words such as “Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father” mean. Then again I don’t know what the words “I love you, Genie” mean either. I say those words with all sincerity, too, but also in blind ignorance o … [Read more...]

Is Mental Illness Caused By “Unrepentant Sin”? How Did Christians Help or Worsen Your Mental Health Problems?

Is mental illness caused by "Unrepentant Sin"? How did Christians help or worsen your mental health problems? This Christmastime share your story on my Facebook Page.My father Francis Schaeffer suffered from depression and I've also felt the dark night of the soul from time to time. How about you? Did anyone help you? In our evangelical family depression was treated as a "spiritual problem" or a "lack of faith." We didn't believe in professional mental health care. We were more likely to … [Read more...]

This Christmas You’ll Face Airline Tyranny: Time for a Revolution?

(those were the days!)I have been flying a lot, really A LOT. In the last ten weeks I’ve taken fifteen cross-country trips. That’s thirty flights plus, because several trips involved flying through hubs and changing planes. (I’m on an author tour for a new bookWHY I AM AN ATHEIST WHO BELIEVES IN GOD: How to give love, create beauty and find peace.)I’m noticing something disturbing: the mentality of our post-9/11 security state is creeping into the non-security-related parts of travel. … [Read more...]
