One Reason Atheism Doesn’t Really Answer Anything

Most people don’t really want to live only according to narrowly defined material facts. Most of us try to direct our human primate evolutionary process along ethical non-material lines. We impose standards that do not come from nature. Nature is cruel yet we try not to be. We prosecute people for war crimes that are no more destructive than what happens every day in the churning cauldron of life where everything is eaten and where death is the only incubator of life. We call murder wrong a … [Read more...]

Love Through the Eyes of Christ — Easter

I was shuffling forward in the communion line, with my five year old granddaughter Lucy in my arms. I was lost in gloomy thoughts, brooding on my past and on my doubts, failures, and my past meanness to my wife Genie (we've been married 44 years) when I was young, stupid and so woefully controlling as a teen "father." I was feeling that going to church was a waste of time. I was feeling unworthy in every sense of the word and sinking into a gray depression.Lucy is always in and out … [Read more...]

World Vision: It’s Never Too Late To Hate

World Vision’s annual budget is $1 billion. When $1 billion is at stake you backtrack. The Evangelical establishment closed ranks against gay men and women signaling to a new generation of Christians that their religion stands for backward stupidity, not to mention hate. World Vision’s move to allow married gay people to work for the organization was denounced by evangelical leaders as a ‘disaster’ betrayal of biblical morality. Christians canceled their child sponsorship.World Vision caved. … [Read more...]

The Only Difference between the Late Fred Phelps and the Evangelical Establishment (Not to Mention Christianity Today Magazine) is that Fred had the Guts to Act on His Evangelical Convictions

Fred Phelps is dead. There’s only one interesting thing about Phelps: He was the mirror that respectable evangelicals hated to look into. The only difference between Fred and, say, the editors of Christianity Today magazine, is that Fred was really, really rude, made less money and got arrested more often. But in the essentials of his Calvinist evangelical theology, Fred was a good mainstream evangelical. If you believe in Calvinist theology -- Phelps stated that he held to all of the Five P … [Read more...]
