What Is BAD (and Good) Sex & Art?

Bad art and bad sex matter for the same reason that bad religion matters. A brain can get used to anything. Once we’re used to something, it starts to seem okay. That capacity to normalize failures is why there are people who think that child abuse is “just discipline,” a Big Mac is “good food,” a rotting shark is “good art,” and hooking up with a predatory stranger is “good sex.”The same pattern of brain damage happens to the millions of people like me who were hurt as children by certain fo … [Read more...]

Peggy Campolo, Brian McLaren, My Granddaughter Amanda, and Me Having a Wild Time at Wild Goose!

Here's Peggy Campolo, one of my most loved and favorite people with me at Wild Goose, and Brian McLaren and Amanda, my 22 year old granddaughter who is visiting from Finland where she goes to the University of Helsinki. Amanda is studying sociology and to put it mildly we had a great time. She's been working on a project about USA mass incarceration of black men, so Amanda was thrilled at all the social justice projects at the festival... And here's someone looking at the show of my art at the fe … [Read more...]

Laura Hillenbrand did it, so just quit whining and write!

Someday I’ll show the movie Seabiscuit to my grandchildren Jack (4) and Lucy (6). On November 1, 1938, President Roosevelt and 40 million other people listening to the radio were captivated by a match race at the Pimlico Race Course between Seabiscuit, the underdog, and War Admiral. Seabiscuit was a small, insignificant horse, “the horse from the other side of the tracks who became a champion,” wrote one commentator. In the movie, a reporter reacting to the coast-to-coast publicity for the race e … [Read more...]

resized 24 x 36 blue sunflower

Once in a while I see the work of a young artist and a bomb goes off in my head— I mean that in a good way. Heather Murphy is one such artist. Her work reminds me of O’Keefe, with shades of Warhol. She can paint! But her painting has a freedom to it that’s stunning. I mean— what to make of an artist that paints rock star icons AND flowers, pop posters that could have been Pink Floyd album covers AND lyrical almost transparent studies of nature? Then there’s her humor. Look I’l … [Read more...]
