Evangelical and/or Post-Evangelical Christianity, “Progressive” or “Conservative,” Has Snapped My Brain and Yours— We’re Addicts

Sorry, folks, but the truth is that the little private world of evangelical and post-evangelical Christianity we’ve built is more or less totally irrelevant to real achievement. Be that “progressive” or “conservative” religion, we’re into make-believe. We’re relying on circular arguments to sell delusional fiction to the spiritually addicted. By the way, that includes me.In the real world: the European Organization for Nuclear Research known as CERN confirms that a boson with mass around 125 … [Read more...]

“love embraced as a stark life-changing and essential fact as real as the carbon compounds that form the basis of life”

Those of us raised in the Christian tradition need to choose to either see God in Jesus or to continue to let the Bible define God. Our tradition says that Jesus is God. Maybe we should act as if we think he is instead of worshiping a book.Maybe we should be brave enough to admit that we are compelled to either become blinded ideologues or we need to forthrightly pick and choose what we follow in the Bible. Most Christians do that anyway, many just don’t admit it.Unbelievers relying on g … [Read more...]

“In this context and with a heavy heart, I hereby return my diploma to the Gordon College Board of Trustees”

Frank,   Thanks again for offering to post this on Patheos.com.  In addition to registering my personal protest via the direct letter and return of my diploma to Gordon College, I'm interested in having the letter reach Gordon students, faculty, alumni, and 'friends' of Gordon College.   I sent it to a contact on faculty at Gordon just yesterday morning and have received numerous positive and appreciative responses already.  I understand that the faculty are under a gag order from the adm … [Read more...]

It Never is About Church– It’s Always About Character

Detail from my painting, "Seeing Love Clearly." Where we go to church, or whether we go, isn’t the point. The point is who are we becoming? Does church help you to become the sort of person you’d pick to be stuck on a desert island with? Good! Go! Does it hurt your chances of becoming that person? Run!          Flee from exclusionary certainty. As the bumper sticker says, “Mean People Suck!” And that goes especially for people who are mean in the name of love.          There is on … [Read more...]

Does the Jacket Copy of my New Book Work For You? WHY I’M AN ATHEIST WHO BELIEVES IN GOD

I have a book about to come out this spring--May 15. Here's the back cover copy below. I'm self publishing because this book does not fit with my secular publishers or any religious publisher. It will have a significant readership, I think. Also, that way I get to keep the price low: $3.99 on Kindle and $9.99 in print.Does the jacket copy work for you? Please let me know. Would you like a free copy as an e-file before publication, in return for agreeing to review it on Amazon? Please let me … [Read more...]

“Crown Of Thorns”

As a painter I think visually. What happened to the crown of thorns after it was removed from Jesus' head? Where was it on Easter morning? Here's one answer. There Are No “Absolutes” So Honor the Ethical Evolution of Our Species by Changing Your Religion

When I began to go to an Orthodox church in 1989 I wanted to find a way to escape myself, my past and my culture. It gradually sank in that the monastic tradition of seeking my inner “desert,” in which to experience God through stillness, could only be cultivated by the practice of ritual, liturgy, prayer and fasting-- not by argument let alone by a better idea, or God forbid, by repackaging. It gradually sank in that when I was asked why I’d become Orthodox a little honesty was in order … [Read more...]
