The American evangelical right wing gave George W. Bush and the Republicans a pass for founding ISIS. ISIS is the only real "result" from our so-called War on Terror. The War on Terror is a creation of big oil married to Saudi lies, radical Islam, and neoconservative pro-Israel stupidity. The big loser is twofold-- the credibility of the US Military and the Christians of the Middle East. And both right and left have preferred to believe their own lies rather than admit the truth: We helped u … [Read more...]
Why Are Progressive Christians AND Right Wing American Fundamentalists Lying to Ourselves About the Islamic Destruction of Christianity in the Middle East?
A Facebook friend sent me a note and a link to one of my dad's old speeches he'd given in 1982 at Coral Gables Church. I spoke there too back in the bad old days of my far right activism. I re-watched the talk. Dad mentioned the projects we'd worked on together several times. It was good to hear his voice. But... while so much of what Dad said was so well said, there is so much I've grown to fear and disagree with.It all boils down to this: apologetics. Dad was relying on a … [Read more...]
Bill Maher seems to love Jesus more than most "evangelicals" do. Maher writes:If you’re a Christian that supports killing your enemy and torture, you have to come up with a new name for yourself. … ‘Capping thy enemy’ is not exactly what Jesus would do. For almost two thousand years, Christians have been lawyering the Bible to try to figure out how ‘Love thy neighbor’ can mean ‘Hate thy neighbor.’ … Martin Luther King Jr. gets to call himself a Christian, because he actually practi … [Read more...]
If Christianity Isn’t the Celebration of a Murder/Suicide Pact Between God the Father and God the Son, Then What is It?
It's Christmas. Time to ask, what the hell Christianity is about, if anything? If Christianity isn't the celebration of a murder/suicide pact between God the Father and God the Son, then what is it?The Crucifixion seems to be something like the story of Abraham and Isaac when God tested Abram by asking him to kill his son. Then God said STOP!If evangelicals like Billy Graham are to be believed, when it came to his own son God said, "Kill him!"Does that make sense on a … [Read more...]

Evangelical and/or Post-Evangelical Christianity, “Progressive” or “Conservative,” Has Snapped My Brain and Yours— We’re Addicts
Sorry, folks, but the truth is that the little private world of evangelical and post-evangelical Christianity we’ve built is more or less totally irrelevant to real achievement. Be that “progressive” or “conservative” religion, we’re into make-believe. We’re relying on circular arguments to sell delusional fiction to the spiritually addicted. By the way, that includes me.In the real world: the European Organization for Nuclear Research known as CERN confirms that a boson with mass around 125 … [Read more...]
“love embraced as a stark life-changing and essential fact as real as the carbon compounds that form the basis of life”
Those of us raised in the Christian tradition need to choose to either see God in Jesus or to continue to let the Bible define God. Our tradition says that Jesus is God. Maybe we should act as if we think he is instead of worshiping a book.Maybe we should be brave enough to admit that we are compelled to either become blinded ideologues or we need to forthrightly pick and choose what we follow in the Bible. Most Christians do that anyway, many just don’t admit it.Unbelievers relying on g … [Read more...]
