"All we have is our stories," writes novelist Schaeffer (Crazy for God, 2008, etc.) in this entertaining, energetic new memoir. He follows through on this point by filling his book with story after story, all told with the clarity and catchy pacing of a born raconteur.... An intriguing, readable memoir aimed squarely at the post-faith modern era." (KIRKUS Review) ***“Part of the impact here, admittedly, is a result of who Frank Schaeffer is and of the platform from which he writes. That … [Read more...]

Put it this way: if violence against women increases in domestic abuse cases around the loss of a favorite NFL team- just imagine the day after Trump loses. As an article on domestic abuse noted in Time: In a comprehensive survey of domestic viole … [Read more...]

A few people in life change everything. One woman (not counting my mother) opened more doors for me than any other person in my childhood. She died yesterday.Jane Stuart Smith was there for me from the time I was six. Jane was by her very life a living definition of the belief that motivates me: that the intrinsic value of beauty is real. (A painting by me, "Joy in July" c Frank Schaeffer 2013)What should we pass on to the next generation? What is essential and non-negotiable? What have our parents founded their lives on that worked? Had they felt as inexperienced and alone as I did the week Mom died in March of 2013? Did being sixty feel like still being a clueless child to them too? Had they experienced what I felt, that the older I got the less I knew?To which I’d like to add, that if after many wanderings you r … [Read more...]
Edith Schaeffer 1914 – 2013 RIPMy mother Edith Schaeffer died today. She was the author of many books on family life and spirituality and co-founder with my father Francis Schaeffer of the evangelical ministry of L’Abri Fellowship in Switzerland. She has just gone to be with the Lord, as she would put it. She died at home which was her wish. This was made possible because of my generous sister Debby and her husband Udo who completely rearranged their lives to care for Mom in her last year … [Read more...]
