"My grandchildren delight in entering into a grownup spiritual world as equals. Perhaps this is one of the gifts non-religious people have a problem experiencing. We’d rather shop than live…

We’re living in an acquisitive capitalist society that is fundamentally anti-family and fundamentally uncomfortable with just enjoying being human. We’d rather shop than live, acquire than love and stare into a screen than hold each other. The pressure parents put on kids of seventeen, eighteen and nineteen to get into the “right schools” is stressful and cruel. So please forgive me while I preach a little about the joy of children and grandchildren, because plenty of sensible people will tell yo … [Read more...]

The Only Hope for 2015– freeing us from the anguish of mortality

I say the Nicene Creed. I say the words “I believe” this and that. I say these words in good conscience, because saying I believe in God is not the same as saying I know what those words mean. I don’t. Words fall short. I don’t know what words such as “Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father” mean. Then again I don’t know what the words “I love you, Genie” mean either. I say those words with all sincerity to my wife of forty four years, too … [Read more...]

Who Knows-Bill Maher Might Even Lead George Bush to Christ Someday

Bill Maher seems to love Jesus more than most "evangelicals" do. Maher  writes:If you’re a Christian that supports killing your enemy and torture, you have to come up with a new name for yourself. … ‘Capping thy enemy’ is not exactly what Jesus would do. For almost two thousand years, Christians have been lawyering the Bible to try to figure out how ‘Love thy neighbor’ can mean ‘Hate thy neighbor.’ …   Martin Luther King Jr. gets to call himself a Christian, because he actually practi … [Read more...]
