(Photo YouTube) "Trump didn’t just fall from the sky to become the nominee, he got (by far) the most votes in a contest in which evangelical voters provided a significant portion of voters and an even larger share of activism. Many are loath to admit Trump’s appeal to evangelicals or attribute their support to a 'lesser-of-two-evils' mentality, because, frankly, Trump is an ugly character that make him a less-than-ideal messenger for the cause. But whether they want to admit it or not, eva … [Read more...]
“The fakes make you dependent. 'Give us $3000 to learn the gifts of the Spirit. Sow a seed to us to get blessed,' they say. They aggrandize their personality cult and finances. They increase their stature with titles like Doctor, Bishop, Apostle, Prophet. This increases their authority to manipulate." The deluded religious belief that any people or nation or church is a “chosen” people is the root of almost all our troubles. So is the lunacy of believing in “Truth” revealed through one special prophet to one special peoples and/or tribe, be they Jews, Muslims or American Evangelical Christians, or conservative Roman Catholics who believe in the special primacy of their popes. The earth bursts with life. Far right exclusionary religion bursts with death. If there is a creator of life He/She/It m … [Read more...]
The Witch-Hunts, Dishonesty, Victimology and Paranoia at Gordon, Wheaton (and Many other Evangelical Schools) Spells Long-Term Disaster For Christian Education in the USA
Evangelical schools are indulging in witch-hunts. They are acting on ideological imperatives and financial incentives—donors often threaten to withhold funds, and parents may refuse to send their children if the schools fail to toe the line— to initiate a new deadly conservative crackdown on faculty, staff and students like nothing since the 1950s. Sources mention how dishonest the schools have been about their motives for removing faculty and silencing dissent. Can evangelical Christian edu … [Read more...]

There is only one defense against the rising, worldwide, fear-filled fundamentalist tide engulfing all religions
My way of trying to encounter God within a church community may well be poison for others. We all bring our backgrounds with us. We’re all running from something. For instance, I know several people raised in the Orthodox Church who have fled to evangelical communities and found God there, or at least found a happier version of themselves. I know other people who share my sort of religious background and they can only find spiritual solace in gatherings of atheists. More power to them! We are a … [Read more...]
Pope Francis Denounces Religious Fundamentalism — Is the Pope an Atheist Who Believes in God… Like Me?
Pope Francis must have been reading my new book that extols the virtues of embracing tolerance and paradox over what I call "certainty addiction." The pope said, "Religious fundamentalism, even before it eliminates human beings by perpetrating horrendous killings, eliminates God himself, turning him into a mere ideological pretext."The pope denounced the religious fundamentalism that inspired the Paris massacres and ongoing Mideast conflicts, saying the attackers were enslaved by "deviant f … [Read more...]
Many religious fundamentalists feel under siege by the secular world and harbor a deeply paranoid sense of victimhood
Maryland and six other states have articles in their constitutions saying people who don’t believe in God are not eligible to hold public office. I thought that fight was over. It isn’t. As reported in the New York Times Rob Boston, director of communications for Americans United for Separation of Church and State said, “Right now we hear a lot of talk from conservative Christians about their being persecuted and their being forced to accommodate same-sex marriage. But there’s nothing in … [Read more...]
