Don’t Ever Thank God for Anything–Here’s Why! (New Jersey man cannot collect damages for his injuries after he was burned while praying)

The appeals court agreed with the lower court’s decision, saying “the danger posed by a plate of sizzling hot food was self-evident.”Only an idiot would pray to God by lowering his face into a frying pan. Man Can't Sue Applebee's For Burning Himself While Praying Over FajitasBy Travis Gettys / Raw Story March 7, 2015 New Jersey man cannot collect damages for his injuries after he was burned while praying over a hot fajita skillet at Appleb … [Read more...]

What Prayer Means to Me

"My grandchildren delight in entering into a grownup spiritual world as equals. Perhaps this is one of the gifts non-religious people have a problem experiencing. They might not meet their children as humble partners in service of something bigger than themselves."  Here is an excerpt from Chapter 6 of WHY I AM AN ATHEIST WHO BELIEVES IN GOD: How to give love, create beauty and find peace. My grandchildren Lucy (five) and Jack (three) know that I pray every morning on my wa … [Read more...]

I haven’t the foggiest idea what prayer does– I do know that I can’t get through my day without praying…

Why does prayer feel both right and normal to me and crazy, too? The best I can do is offer this analogy. They don’t believe in callings per se. They just have to go there. In the same way, I just have to pray. An Introduction to the Eastern Orthodox Church For the Curious (My List of Recommended Reading)

I'm often asked about the Eastern Orthodox Church since I have been going to a Greek Orthodox church for the last 25 years. Since I come from an evangelical background I get the question "Why did you convert?"I didn't. The word "conversion" implies the evangelical idea of salvation as a one-stop conversion-to-Jesus moment, AKA the "born-again" experience of passing from "dark to light."But the Orthodox view of salvation is of a mysterious journey toward God. So I don't think I was "lost" … [Read more...]

The Blessed Hypocrisy “Method Acting” of Salvation PART 2 (of 4)

It’s tempting to rationalize my bad behavior as “caused” by wrong ideas. But blaming wrong beliefs for our true biological natures is as crazy as thinking that right ideas will save us. So when atheists blame religion for war, they are being as silly as Christians who blame atheism for the Gulag. And thinking you can make some “god” forgive you by believing “the” correct doctrine about him is absurd. Any god that petty isn’t worth serving--not to mention hard to credit with the creation of the un … [Read more...]
