It's Christmas. Time to ask, what the hell Christianity is about, if anything? If Christianity isn't the celebration of a murder/suicide pact between God the Father and God the Son, then what is it?The Crucifixion seems to be something like the story of Abraham and Isaac when God tested Abram by asking him to kill his son. Then God said STOP!If evangelicals like Billy Graham are to be believed, when it came to his own son God said, "Kill him!"Does that make sense on a … [Read more...]

Here is an excerpt from WHY I AM AN ATHEIST WHO BELIEVES IN GOD: How to give love, create beauty and find peaceChapter 9Sam likes to call me out of the blue and casually mention the latest dumb stunt perpetrated by the Religious Right, the Roman Catholic bishops or the Republican Party, as if I have anything to do with it. Conservative right wing evangelicals like the editors of Christianity Today magazine, hate this movie. That should be reason enough to like it, but there's more. Hellbound? makes a profound argument for a loving God. What's so scary about that, to sane people anyway? And for … [Read more...]
Is it any coincidence that the latest war of religion that started on September 11, 2001, is being fought primarily between the United States and the Islamic world? It just so happens that no two groups of humanity are more ingrained with the doctrine of literal fundamentalist religion -- including a retributive view of God best expressed by a belief in a Hell -- than conservative Muslims and conservative Christians. American fundamentalists and Islamic fundamentalists deserve each other. And … [Read more...]
Listening to the BBC Radio 4 program In Our Time, hosted by the always wonderful Melvyn Bragg about Foxe's Book of Martyrs (1563) one story hit home—hard! One of the show’s contributors told the story of Perotine Massey, a Guernsey woman burned for heresy by the Roman Catholics. She gave birth while in the flames. The baby was tossed back into the fire after it burst from her burning stomach and landed -- alive -- at the feet of a soldier guarding the pire. This awful e … [Read more...]
