Today's religious world (Christian/Islamic/Jewish/Hindu-nationalist et al) thrives on private "facts." Were you home "schooled?" Do you think Donald Trump is smart? Did you go to a Christian "college" or other type of Madrasa? Are you the the type of Jew or Muslim who feels God "gave" you the so-called Holy Land? Do you believe that George W. Bush was a good president or that it's wrong to sit next to a woman on a plane? Do you believe in a literal heaven or hell or that God wants you to cut off … [Read more...]

If you believe that God created women then you have to believe that sex is just for pleasure. If that's not true then why does the anatomy of the female orgasm have nothing to do with procreation? If God made women then He, She or It made women's sexual equipment for pleasure first-- and babies second. In other words the basic Christian doctrine of sex has to be that orgasms are intrinsically good and need no justification. The clitoris is outside the vaginal canal. So if God made us, or i … [Read more...]
I have a nagging question for my atheist friends: if we’re nothing, why bother to convince us of our nothingness? Who cares?
Today’s secular science of human insignificance inspires its own theology. This secular theology assigns us a contradictory groveling insignificant, significance. We have evolved to a high enough level of ethical consciousness to understand that we’re guilty as charged, and are merely insignificant and yet, morally culpable destroyers of life.We may not be saying “Lord have mercy” so often these days, but we’re still muttering “I’m unworthy!” As with past theology, a vast oeuvre of … [Read more...]
The future of the meta-universe Church is not going to be about more or less entertainment, rock bands or cool hip young leaders but about openly embracing doubt
What’s needed to save the dwindling Church is a new paradigm: the embrace of atheism as the true religion and religion as the true atheism. Like box stores, the trend in churches is a few get huge while the rest slowly fade away. Progressive Christians and fundamentalists seem to agree when they look for causes of church attendance decline. They parse the details of how church is “done” related to both theology and method. To rock out or not? To affirm a literal gospel, or not? These quest … [Read more...]
It was a bright September day, clear, cool and perfect. My wife Genie, my grandchildren Lucy (age 5 and in the picture here taken that spring at Easter), Jack (3) and my daughter-in-law, Becky, were sprawled on the lawn. Lucy wandered over to the vegetable garden and picked cherry tomatoes. She ate them while dancing and watching her shadow flicker over the grass. Becky was starting to show with her third child.Love, contentment and sweetness were as palpable as the sunlight. The whole world … [Read more...]
Evangelical and/or Post-Evangelical Christianity, “Progressive” or “Conservative,” Has Snapped My Brain and Yours— We’re Addicts
Sorry, folks, but the truth is that the little private world of evangelical and post-evangelical Christianity we’ve built is more or less totally irrelevant to real achievement. Be that “progressive” or “conservative” religion, we’re into make-believe. We’re relying on circular arguments to sell delusional fiction to the spiritually addicted. By the way, that includes me.In the real world: the European Organization for Nuclear Research known as CERN confirms that a boson with mass around 125 … [Read more...]
what is truer than a story about a journey into one person’s Eternal Present powered by a single bite of tomato on a summer afternoon?
Scientists and theologians can’t offer better than circular arguments, because there are no other kinds of arguments. Bible believers quote the Bible, and scientists quote other scientists. How do either scientists or theologians answer this question about the accuracy of their conclusions: “In reference to what?”Our status as fallen sinners or diminished and newly humbled microbes is calculated in reference to biblical or scientific stories that are self-reinforcing. Is there a frame of refe … [Read more...]
