“This is what being raised in the southern Bible belt will do to you…If it is ok, I will share my head for the first time to anyone”
NOTE: If you come from an evangelical background and feel anguish you are not alone. Here's proof! I get 20-30 emails and FB messages a day from readers of my new book expressing anguish over their religious backgrounds. I answer all of them. I learn more from my readers than they learn from me. Here's one exchange I found very moving. (Printed here by permission, name changed.) Take hope. Sat, Aug 16, 2014 12:26 pmFrank: It is such a relief to get to share my head with someone. How I Trashed Frank Schaeffer in my Novel as an American Hitler and Why He’s Promoting It: Guest BLOG by the Former Schaeffer Family Crossway Books Publicist
Katie sent me this essay about trashing me. It's good so I'm publishing it as a guest blog here. Also: I come out okay by the end! Back in the early 1980s as a very young woman Katie Andraski worked as a publicist in big time Christian publishing at Crossway Books. She did what few evangelical publicity people ever managed to do: Katie convinced editors at Newsweek, The New York Times, and the NBC "Today Show" to publicize the Schaeffer family as we emerged as leaders in the religious right. In t … [Read more...]
I would not have burned in hell for sleeping with the many women I’ve looked at longingly, but adultery would have ruined my marriage
Ironically, although Mom and Dad may have been deluded by their fundamentalist certainties, I am mostly at peace in my home where my grandchildren Lucy (5), Jack (4) and I play Botticelli because I was indoctrinated with knee-jerk guilt. I realize now that my parents were often right for the wrong reasons. For instance, I feel guilt when I shout at Lucy and Jack. And when it comes to the “big sins” I would not have burned in hell for sleeping with the many women I’ve looked at longingly, but adul … [Read more...]
I’ll make a bet: If I asked you for a $32.79 donation to a Crowdsourcing project to change religion into a “church of hopeful uncertainty” you’d donate
Dear Patheos Friends,I’m Launching a PROJECT “Say NO to Fundamentalism and YES to Mystery, Wonder and Love!”Will You Help?I’ll make a bet: If I asked you for a $32.79 donation to a "Crowdsourcing" project of mine that would change what religion is in America by turning our “church of hopeful uncertainty” into a virtual “mega church” of tolerance, forbearance and love you’d donate. But I’m not asking for that. I want something else: healed souls one at a time! And here’s why I da … [Read more...]
what is truer than a story about a journey into one person’s Eternal Present powered by a single bite of tomato on a summer afternoon?
Scientists and theologians can’t offer better than circular arguments, because there are no other kinds of arguments. Bible believers quote the Bible, and scientists quote other scientists. How do either scientists or theologians answer this question about the accuracy of their conclusions: “In reference to what?”Our status as fallen sinners or diminished and newly humbled microbes is calculated in reference to biblical or scientific stories that are self-reinforcing. Is there a frame of refe … [Read more...]
