Day Six, Trans-Atlantic Disney Cruise: Nova Scotia

Day Six, Trans-Atlantic Disney Cruise: Nova Scotia May 21, 2015

DAF The weather is rainy and drizzly as we pull into Halifax, Nova Scotia.

We aren’t thrilled to be here, as this port was added on when Iceland was canceled. It doesn’t help that Halifax apparently was the main center of operations for the Titanic disaster so many years ago. (A great story, but not one I want to hear in the middle of a Trans-Atlantic cruise.)

This should tell you how ill-prepared we were for this vacation: when we got to Halifax, we literally ran errands. On a shopping trip to try to find shoes (we ended up with ONE tennis shoe for Naomi and ONE black boot for me), we saw a “gentleman’s barber shop.” I looked at Austin’s hair and made an executive decision: the boy needed a trim.

The Canadian “gentlemen’s barber shop” was run by a tattooed hipster with tee shirt that read: “My generation was born controled. I hope I die before I sell my soul.” After the guy looked at Austin’s hair, he said, “Yes, we have basically the same hair.”

BarberAustin’s eyes got large. The hipster barber had long locks of hair with the sides shaved almost to his scalp. What did he mean? If he cut it the same way, they’d look similar?

Before we had a chance to ponder his statement, its meaning became obvious. He took out the clippers and started transforming my little boy into a hipster.

Camille and I started laughing and could not stop. By the time Austin was done, he was miserable and mad that we’d turned him over to a Canadian tattooed hipster. Camille comforted him, and we all laughed that we used our port excursion to run errands.

We also signed up for a sail boat ride that lasted 2 hours or so. They taught us how to tie knots and raise the sail. When they asked for volunteers, I’m sure they expected the kids to tentatively hold up hands. Instead, David was the first person to jump out of his seat. For two hours, he stood at the bow to of the ship and looked pensively across the foggy water.

We’ve learned since we arrived here that David – in his parallel fantasy life – would work on a cargo ship. We half expected him not to return to the Disney magic and just live in Nova Scotia with his own boat somewhere on his own island.

At night, Frozen was showing at the Buena Vista Theater: 8:00. We put Naomi down at 7:30, as usual, but Camille and Austin had other plans. At about 7:50, they went into her room and whispered, “Want to sneak out and see a movie?” “Secretly,” they took her to the movie and she practically bounced to the theater.

We may pay for this late-night expedition tomorrow, but Camille and Austin said it was about the sweetest thing they’d ever seen.

Here are the two winners of our “photo contest,” which we do at every port. Out of modesty, I won’t tell you who took them.
