Trans-Atlantic Disney Cruise, Day 12: Not Living Up to Vacation Demands

Trans-Atlantic Disney Cruise, Day 12: Not Living Up to Vacation Demands May 27, 2015

Do you ever feel like vacations demand more of you than you can deliver?

To my delight, I discovered the Frozen “Freezing the Night Away” deck party is happening tonight. The whole boat is decorated with “Frozen” paraphernalia. The main atrium is cloaked with “icicles,” the waiters at dinner dressed like they could appear in the movie, the menu was all geared toward some aspect of the film, and more. (The salmon was excellent for the main course, and the Norwegian pancakes with strawberry cream cheese was surprisingly good for a dessert.)

But here’s a confession: we didn’t do the Elsa makeover (isn’t a $200 price tag a little steep for the 7 year old set?), we didn’t go to the Maypole dance in the atrium, we didn’t do “Anna’s Chocolate Scavenger Hunt,” and we forgot about the character appearance event.

The last “Frozen” event is tonight at 10:30 PM, and Naomi’s been sleeping in the bed next to me since 8. (We’re 7 hours ahead of Tennessee time.) We did a great job keeping this deck party from her until the server mentioned the deck party at the very end of dinner – where he told her that Elsa would make it snow (!!) and her jaw dropped.

Anyway, we made the executive decision not to go to the party… and in spite of the fact that we’ve given Naomi a 15 night cruise, I feel bad. I guess I just wish that she could navigate the waters of life a little more smoothly so she could do things like this. (We’re so far north that it will still be daylight at 10:30 when the party happens.) She won’t love Olaf forever. Though, David loves Olaf, so perhaps she might.

I have to remember that Naomi has come a long way, baby. This year’s vacation was better than last year’s. With every month, she’s growing and becoming more aware, more mature, and more capable of handling the complexities of life.

Today, we were in Stavanger, Norway – a gorgeous city by the sea. Instead of doing the excursions, we walked around, shopped, and took a self-guided tour through the residential areas. We didn’t do the excursions, and it was more than enough. (Of course, this is all more than enough — it’s funny how even on vacation you are struck with feelings of parental inadequacy when surrounded by hundreds of other parents with homemade Disney door decorations and hand held “cruise planners” to make the most of every second here.)

We got on the ship just as a light rain began to fall…  it was another beautiful day with the family, and we are blessed.

Next stop: Oslo
