The Lake of Fire

A couple nice articles to share with you:

This one from the local Virginian Pilot newspaper talks to some good people who are reviled for their atheism. Because, obviously, they will burn in hell. Which raises the question: If they’re going to burn in hell, why do the religious people have to dislike them, too?

Newsweek talks to Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and Daniel Dennett and concludes that (*gasp*) being an atheist in America isn’t easy. Newsweek: Always first with that earth-shattering, mind-bending news.

– Apparently, someone decided to write a book about a “Friendly Dialogue Between an Atheist and a Christian.” Damn. Jim Henderson and I have been scooped… Wait. I take that back. Apparently, the atheist doesn’t know basic logic. Says Zhou Qizheng, the atheist:

“I asked [Christian Luis] Palau to conduct a lab experiment to show that God exists. But he told me to have a lab test to show that God doesn’t exist… Neither of us could do it.”

Someone please go slap him and tell him no one can prove a negative and the burden of proof rests on the person making a claim.

What does the Palau, the Christian, say?

“I don’t have an answer to where God came from,” Palau said.

Nice try on the dialoguing. But no. It’s one thing to be friendly. It’s another to have something to say. If the quotations above are any indication of the rest of the book, the men somehow found a way to make a conversation about God utterly meaningless.

Religious people don’t dislike Atheists, at least most of the ones I know don’t. They just don’t understand Atheism and that frustrates them, probably like Atheists don’t understand Religion. I’d like to try to understand, if you’d help me do that.
