First Openly Nontheistic Member of Congress

Next Monday, March 12, the Secular Coalition for America will be making history when they announce the first openly nontheistic member of Congress!

Read more information here.

Just to reiterate: Congress.

Not a local mayor. Or dogcatcher.

Someone’s also getting the $1,000 prize

Is it the guy from Wisconsin? His name slipped my mind.

Free at last! Free at last! Great… .ummmmmm

He’s not exactly “open” yet if they have to announce him…

  • Austin Cline

Nontheistic? I hope this isn’t a case of an atheist who is trying to avoid the label “athiest.” That would take quite a bit of the punch out of “coming out.” It would feel like someone trying to say “Hey, I’m one of you… I just don’t want to be too closely identified with you, so I’ll use some other label to confuse people who aren’t reading very closely…”

    Yeah, thanks.

Did the opposition forget how to run a smear campaign or something?

    Stephen Kagen is my guess.

  • txatheist

Mazie Hirono from Hawaii is my alternate guess.

I suppose “nontheistic” may not necessarily mean “atheist”. Maybe they’re a Buddhist or a Wiccan or some variety of pantheist.

I already know who this non-theist is. It would be BERNIE SANDERS, the senator from Vermont. He has made it clear publicly in the past that he is an agnostic. Since he comes from a small state, most of the nation doesn’t hear about him. I have spoken with him in the past on this subject and in not so many words he says he is an atheist. But here in Vt , there are LOTS of us, so it isn’t such a big deal as it would be in most other states.
