Best bet is to get under a reinforced doorway or a heavy table, so that if something falls it won't be on top of you. I've been here two years and the landlord hasn't done any upkeep on it. The unit next to me is in worse shape and I'm surprised he is allowed to rent it out that way. She has a water leak under her bathroom floor and the floor is rotted out in her bathroom. The ceiling over there, well I'd be scared to death of it. My unit (side of the duplex) is better, but only because we've done a lot of upkeep ourselves. I think drafts are my main complaint, but I'm sure her side affects ours, esp in the water pressure dept. If your house is made of wood you’re in one of the safest structures ever built as far as earthquakes go. Running outside can get you clobbered by stuff falling off the roof or exterior walls. If it’s a really big quake you won’t be able to stay on your feet anyway. The three main dangers in a wood house are the unfixed furniture like bookcases and refrigerators flying around, (they really jump) an unreinforced chimney falling onto the roof and then into the rooms, and fire from gas pipes left on after the shaking stops. You can take care of all that ahead of time with just a little effort.
