The earth is about as flat as her stomach and her sense of reality. I'm just shocked they hired another right wing freak. I mean I understand balance, but she is so far removed from reality she is not even balanced herself. And she's making millions to be able to say shit like that! Bad Barbara for picking her!!!

Yeah. Right now, I'm dreading another predicted ice storm in a few days. They are saying it will be worse than the one in January. I don't think I can handle another ice storm that knocks out our electricity for days.

How do you take of the gas ahead of time when you don’t know when it’s coming?

Know where the gas shut-off valve for your building is and have a wrench or whatever tool will turn it stored right there with the valve. It's usually at the meter. Chain the wrench to the meter so it doesn't walk away. After the shaking stops you can shut off the gas supply so that if there are any leaks inside the building the gas won't build up. Electricity is usually knocked out the instant a strong quake hits but when the power comes back on, if gas has been building up in the house an electrical spark from a damaged wire or an automatic pilot lighter can cause an explosion. This happened to an unoccupied house in my neighborhood. It went off like a bomb. Knowing where your unit's water and electricity valves and switches are is also helpful.

There are gas valves available that automatically shut off gas supply when there is a temblor strong enough to damage pipes, but your building's owner doesn't sound like he's interested in such things.

If your water heater is inside your unit or where you keep your car, strap the tank to the wall with metal strapping and bolts. You can find instructions online. It is the single heaviest object in most homes and it's deadly. It can crush or scald residents and of course break gas pipes.

Isn't this more pleasant than talking about morons on TV?

Running outside is not good because of the electrical power lines that may be falling and the threat of electrocution. Best bet is to get under a reinforced doorway or a heavy table, so that if something falls it won't be on top of you.

This house is not as stable as you may think. I've been here two years and the landlord hasn't done any upkeep on it. The unit next to me is in worse shape and I'm surprised he is allowed to rent it out that way. She has a water leak under her bathroom floor and the floor is rotted out in her bathroom. The ceiling over there, well I'd be scared to death of it.

My unit (side of the duplex) is better, but only because we've done a lot of upkeep ourselves. I think drafts are my main complaint, but I'm sure her side affects ours, esp in the water pressure dept. If I were a housing inspector, I'd condemn that side of the duplex and make him bring the whole house up to code.

How do you take of the gas ahead of time when you don't know when it's coming?

Unfortunately, we're not ready to move again yet, but we're working on it.

I know it's off topic, but maybe an intelligent chat about earthquake safety is better than an endless agreement about how stupid Sherri Shepherd is.
Mriana,

If I feel the house shake, I’m getting out of my house as fast as I can.

If your house is made of wood you're in one of the safest structures ever built as far as earthquakes go. Running outside can get you clobbered by stuff falling off the roof or exterior walls. If it's a really big quake you won't be able to stay on your feet anyway. The three main dangers in a wood house are the unfixed furniture like bookcases and refrigerators flying around, (they really jump) an unreinforced chimney falling onto the roof and then into the rooms, and fire from gas pipes left on after the shaking stops. You can take care of all that ahead of time with just a little effort.

You know, this does make me wonder something: have standards of Bible education in churches slipped over the years? Do Christians know less about Biblical stuff now than they used to? Or is this just a single isolated case of a high-profile ignoramus?

I think it depends on what denomination you're talking about.
