Good one BJorn

Of course another religious reaction to astronomy is that God created all these non-earth heavenly objects (billions and billions of galaxies not to mention the relatively trivial number [as compared to the total number in the universe] of starts, planets, and other objects in our own galaxy) for our amusement. The religious idea is that it is all about us. Yes God created it all for us for we are in His image. Or was it all created for Jesus? I kind of get those concepts confused... Or did the devil create all those extra-terrestrial objects to confuse us and weaken our faith? I guess the answer all depends on what church you attend.

<blockquote>Jeff -
"the religious notion that a savior came to just one of these planets at one time to save one particular species"</blockquote>

See, that just proves it's even more miraculous! The giganticness of the universe does nothing to weaken the claim that the Christian God impregnated a woman 2000 years ago. In fact, the emotional reaction some feel to this sense of existing in such a vast space, a sense of awe, is experienced by religious and non religious people, but for the religious it's, "God made all of this, and made me too, and in the midst of all of this God knows each hair on my head? Jeepers!"

When you think of all the planets in all the solar systems in all the galaxies and clusters of galaxies and bands of clusters of galaxies.... and... and then think about the religious notion that a savior came to just one of these planets at one time to save one particular species at one particular time in that species development... well... well what about all the other possible species on all the other possible inhabitable planets at all the other times that the universe has been in existence....

With the help of the music, that video got me quite emotional.

It's so freakin' awesome how much more there is in this universe. It's a shame we will never get to experience it all.

In a way, whenever we on Earth make claims about the universe, we are speaking for all of these planets, stars, galaxies, superclusters, and the billions of life forms living throughout.

It is fair to make restricted claims about the physical/mathematical observations we can make. But to claim your inside knowledge about deities is to make claims for billions of stars and living beings without even trying to consult them. Harsh.

Ah, yes, thanks for the correction, Skepitgator. I always get their names mixed up. (If only Ms. Fairchild had kept her given name, Patsy Anne McClenny...)

I loved it. But it didn't make me feel tiny. It made me feel huge. When I see stuff like this I lose my despair for a time and feel hopeful for humanity again. Then I go to Wal-Mart and realize we are all doomed.
