I wasn’t exactly sure where to post this, but I read some of your Questions for God, and as a human, I have a few answers.

Q: Ought not the atheists be treated with more compassion and understanding rather than to be treated with defense mechanisms by the religious? After all, it is the godly who feel they have a supernatural connection, whereas the atheist does not.

A: People who truly follow the teachings of Christ do treat ALL others (atheists or not) with compassion and understanding, instead of forcing the Bible and God down their throat.

Q: Why did you make us such sinful creatures? You are all-powerful and all-knowing, right? Why did you give us the ability to do things you call sinful? Why, then, do you punish us for doing exactly what you created us to do?

A: We were not created to sin. We made the choice to sin. We are punished for doing so. Just as if you shoplift from a store, you’re going to be arrested. If you break God’s law, you’re going to be punished.

Q: Why do you just take the ‘soul’ up to heaven? Don’t you have more room up there than that? Can’t you just take the whole person? We’re running out of room down here and graves that are supposed to have everlasting piece are constantly being disturbed and robbed.

A: What’s the point of taking the body? Once you’re put in the ground (if you chose burial), you decompose and go back into the earth like everything else that dies. The soul is the only thing that matters.

Q: Couldn’t you have been a little kinder and just given all these people the capability to believe in you?

A: Everyone has the capability to believe in God, it’s whether or not we choose to. It’s a personal choice.

Q: If there are so many religions and each thinks their beliefs are the only right ones and that everyone else is wrong, then most people are wrong – and if one religion is right, most people on the planet consider that one wrong. So which religion is the one that is right?

A: I don’t know what religion is “right”. Although I am a Christian, I don’t presume that we are the “only” ones who will go to Heaven. I think there is much to be learned from many different religions.

Check out some of my other Jesus cartoons and articles!

    http://www.holyjuan.com/search?q=jesus

Thanks for the link! I try to be a friendly Atheist as well.

  • Brenda Maxwell

Ha! Ha! That’s a good one!

  • QrazyQat

Christy’s response starts off with the One True Scotsman fallacy and goes downhill from there; the rest is simply stating things as facts that no one can possibly actually know.

  • Christy

I didn’t state anything as facts, I simply gave my opinion. Right or wrong, those are the things I believe. You’re more than entitled to your opinion and/or beliefs. I’m not going to stand in judgment of you for that.

  • Sam

I liked cartoons better when artists knew how to draw.

  • http://www.holyjuan.com HolyJuan

Well that’s cool because I’m not an artist!

  • Claire

HolyJuan, your cartoons are very cute. Please don’t pay any attention to our latest idea-free blight who calls himself Sam.

All he knows how to do is throw stones.

  • Sam

    I’m not an artist!

    You can say that again.

  • http://friendlyatheist.com Hemant Mehta

Sam — Stop being mean. I’ve banned before for much less.

  • http://www.holyjuan.com HolyJuan

Ha! Speaking of throwing stones! Let’s see your most recent Jesus at a Winter Olympic Event drawing!

It’s OK, I’ve been praised by worse people than Sam and insulted by better.

  • Sam

    Sam — Stop being mean.

Dude, your entire site is dedicated to being mean. You spend hours every day finding ways to call people different from you “misguided” and “poorly educated” and poking fun at them. If being mean is against the rules then you’re going to have to shut the site down.

  • http://friendlyatheist.com Hemant Mehta

    Thinking differently is ok.

Thinking the Bible is literally true, evolution is trumped by Creationism, and that 9/11 was caused by embracing homosexuals, etc. is misguided and foolish. To teach that is to further bad education.

  • Sam

How does that justify spending hours a day running a hate site? Are you saying that it’s OK to publicly ridicule people as long as you find them “misguided and foolish”?

A tiny percent of Christians believe “that 9/11 was caused by embracing homosexuals”. Yet you attack us all.

Why would you post a link to “questions for God” like “Why do you let your followers murder and rape us?” You do realize that God is sacred to us, don’t you? Do you consider that “friendly”?

If you had created a site to ridicule homosexuals or blacks or Jews or the elderly, you would have immediately been called out as the hater that you are. What makes you think attacking Christians makes you any better?

  • Claire

What particular form of (unfortunately widespread) stupidity/blindness is it that can’t distinguish between criticizing an idea and attacking a group of people? They are not the same, now or ever.

That’s a serious question, because I just don’t get how people today don’t get that. It was built into our constitution as freedom of speech, so that people could discuss ideas freely. Discussing ideas, including religion, is not hate speech. How do people not GET that?

Saying that christianity is evil is not hate speech, period. Saying that christians are evil might be, but that’s not something I have ever said or ever would.

What christians (and muslims, etc) consider sacred is garbage. Their god is simply loathsome. That’s not hate speech. Saying that believing in that god makes a person a second class citizen or a non-person, and they should be beaten or killed, would be, but I wouldn’t say that because that’s just wrong.

The closest thing to hate speech I have seen on this site lately comes from Sam, who attacks atheists for not believing what he does. You want to hear hate speech, Sam, listen to yourself.

If your god existed and was nice, he would be so ashamed of you. He doesn’t, so you should just be ashamed of yourself.

  • Sam

    Very intelligent.

A hate site is a website that promotes hatred. This is a classic example of a hate site.

I didn’t mention “hate speech” at all. The term “hate speech” is a legal term that relates to limits on free speech. That is a very different topic.

What christians (and muslims, etc) consider sacred is garbage. Their god is simply loathsome.

That is exactly what I am talking about. This entire site is dedicated to that type of hatred. This site exists so you can call people “stupid” and “blind” and say things like

If your god existed and was nice, he would be so ashamed of you. He doesn’t, so you should just be ashamed of yourself.

Of course nobody is questioning your constitutional right to say those types of things, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t mean-spirited.

  • Claire

    Sam said:

This site exists so you can call people “stupid” and “blind”

You just proved that you still don’t get it. I don’t call groups of people those things, only ideas and a few individuals who earn it.

Of course nobody is questioning your constitutional right to say those types of things

No “of course” about it. Did you not see the post about Rep. Monique Davis? She questions it, and she isn’t alone, not by a long shot.

And I don’t hate religion, I just find it disgusting. Not the same.

So, Sam, why are you here? What do you hope to accomplish, except pissing people off? Why are you here doing exactly what you accuse us of doing? Do you think you have made anyone here think any better of theists? There are some theists who come here who have done that (Mike, Linda, Arlen, a few others) and you seem to be doing your best to undo their good work. Any particular reason for that?

  • http://www.runicfire.net ansuzmannaz

Wow, I came here just to say “Jesus has a loooong face” (loved the strip, by the way), and suddenly it’s turned into the least friendly comments thread I’ve seen on this site. It’s true I don’t read a lot of the comment threads here, but the ones I have tended to be a lot more harmonious. A lot of that was Sam’s doing, but I was likewise surprised at QrazyQat’s response to Christy’s post. I agree with the content of the evaluation, but the tone was stand-offish. Unless there’s a posting history I’m missing here, I think Christy deserves a little more respect than that for taking the time to respond to the “Questions for God” challenge.

  • Sam

And I don’t hate religion, I just find it disgusting. Not the same.

Nobody accused you of hating religion, or asked you if you “find it disgusting”. Saying “what christians (and muslims, etc) consider sacred is garbage” is hateful. Saying “their god is simply loathsome” is hateful. But far be it from me to speculate on what could cause such irritability and mood swings.

  • Claire

And the sexist asshat troll is back….. So, what accounts for your nastiness? Girls won’t go out with you? Inadequate size? Mommy took away your porn?

Why are you here, aside from embarrassing all other christians?

I’m betting he calls me “immature”, as though he doesn’t take the prize in that category….

  • cautious

Why are you here, aside from embarrassing all other christians?

It seems like Sam’s self-appointed job is to tell a Friendly Atheist that atheism is not friendly, while telling the rest of us here that, apparently, “being disgusted” at certain aspects of religion is the same as hating religion.

Oh, and to every so often make a belittling comment about women and then never, ever, own up to making said comments.

  • Christy

Sam, I appreciate that you are a Christian, however, I think that you’re a *little* out of line here.

Of course nobody is questioning your constitutional right to say those types of things, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t mean-spirited.

I do not agree with the things Claire said, IE:

What christians (and muslims, etc) consider sacred is garbage. Their god is simply loathsome.

However, that is her right to feel and believe as she chooses. She or anyone on here isn’t trying to *force* us to believe the way they do, they’re simply stating the way the feel. Just as when I answered questions earlier, I was simply stating how I feel and what I believe. Someone left, what I considered to be, a somewhat snide comment in response. That’s fine. It’s their opinion and they have that right. I may not agree with them, and they may not agree with me, but we’re in the US. We’ve got that right.

Speaking of hate, there are PLENTY of hate sites in the name of Christ, Allah, Mohammed– the list goes on. There is hate in every religion and/or lack there of. It’s not limited to the religion, just the ignorant who happen to belong to the religion.

and thank you to, ansuzmannaz for in a way, standing up for me. This is the third post that I’ve *ever* posted here.

I’m not the type of person who rolls up onto an atheist website to preach “hell fire and brimstone” or “to convert the heathen”. I do enjoy learning about other’s beliefs and why they believe what they do.

  • Sam

    Christy,

Thank you for your comments. I found your answers above insightful and you seem to be an bright person.

that is her right to feel and believe as she chooses.

That seems obvious to me. I think everybody here realizes that we’ve got the right to our own opinions, but we have been discussing the merits of those opinions. The Klan has the right to their own opinions too, but their opinions are flawed and hateful and there’s nothing wrong with my saying so.

I’m not the type of person who rolls up onto an atheist website to preach “hell fire and brimstone” or “to convert the heathen”.

Nor am I. If you want to be an atheist, knock yourself out. But it’s wrong when people say things like “what christians consider sacred is garbage” and “their god is simply loathsome”. As you say, they have every right to express their opinion, but their opinion is ignorant and hateful.

  • Claire

    Sam said:

we have been discussing the merits of those opinions

Ha! You completely refuse to discuss ideas at all, ever, you only rant and insult.

Why are you here, Sam? This is the third time I’ve asked you, don’t you even know?

  • Claire

Hi, Christy! I wish there were more like you here who get that, they seem to be in short supply.

It was unfortunate that your first post ended up on the wrong thread, that may have been why you got the reception you did. There is a lot of drive-by hit-and-run preaching that does end up here, and you may have been mistaken for one of those (or not, I can’t really speak to the other person’s reasons). But that’s clearly not what you are, so don’t let it discourage you from further posts.

  • Sam

    Why are you here, Sam?

Hemant spams a forum that I frequent on another site, directing traffic here so he can hawk his book. I followed his link and ended up here. Once I saw the hatred and stupidity being spewed here I spoke up about it.

    Ha!

    Oh brother.

  • http://friendlyatheist.com Hemant Mehta

Hemant spams a forum that I frequent on another site, directing traffic here so he can hawk his book.

    I do? That’s a lie.

I put some of my own posts on Digg/Reddit, but that’s hardly spamming. If no one likes the posts, the links go away.

  • Sam

What part is a lie? Look at your history on Reddit. Almost every post links to this site.

  • cautious

    Sam,

Firstly…to quote wiki, “Reddit is a social news website on which users can post links to content on the web.” Hermant uses it to post links to content on his page. I fail to see how that is spamming. Maybe there’s another link you could show us that actually shows him spamming?

Secondly, most of your comments are spewing hatred or stupidity. If you were attempting to shame anyone into changing their behavior, all you’ve done is show us that you are just as capable of having no tact. Just look at this thread, reread what you’ve written, and try to argue that you, somehow, have the ethical high ground.

Or is turning the other cheek for wimps?

  • Claire

So that’s what this was all about, Sam? You decide (wrongly) that someone peed in your playground sandbox, and now you’ve come to return the favor in his living room? That’s beyond childish, that’s well into redneck territory.

Although in your own mind you have no doubt made it into a holy war, your own personal jihad, where you can suck up to your god and score brownie points the easy way, taking on those evil internet atheists who just won’t be properly submissive. It also no doubt gives you a warm glow to be insulted by us, so you can tell yourself you are suffering for your faith in some sort of meaningful way.

That’s so much easier than actually doing any good in the world. You have clearly chosen the most comfortable path to your heaven.
