The Website Has Been Switched

I’m trying something a bit new in terms of how the page looks. It’ll take a little while to get the kinks worked out. Please bear with me! RSS readers should have no problem, though.

Huzzah! Looks like there’s a few changes still to be made (sidebar isn’t quite right yet), but overall, I like it a lot better!

  • The Unbrainwashed

This is much worse IMO. i loved the previous site’s look. Very fluid, easy to digest

  • http://dbzer0.com db0

Not half bad. I was tired of looking at your ugly mug anyway (j/k) :P

Now get a good comment system as well :P

    Cheers!

  • Elsa

But the only reason I came to this site was to look at the picture of Hemant… :’(

  • Ngeli

This is not an improvement, the dark colors don’t actually emphasize the ‘friendly’…

  • Steven

An impressive change to the website – though it somehow seems a little less friendly without your smilin’ face in the logo.

  • http://woofkitty.blogspot.com SAMIZDAT

    I like it!

  • http://stevemegan.blogspot.com Megan

Hmmm. New look. I like it.

  • http://omega-geek.blogspot.com Spook

Ick! Ick! It’s so horrible that I’m convinced that there can’t be a god who would allow this site to be so ugly! Perhaps you should have tried intelligent design when you made the new layout.

Actually, no part of what I just wrote was serious, but there’s a rule that you can’t change a website without someone saying that it sucks. It actually looks pretty decent.

  • Stephen

New! No! Resist change :) Your previous blog is gospel, this is some new cult or sect! I don’t want some “First Reformed Blog of the Living Waters of the Friendly Atheist” I want the fundamental teachings of the original parchment scrolls of the Friendly Atheist in the original 1s and 0s.

    :)

P.S. I like the new banner. (Random cute red-heads would have worked too).

  • http://www.tuibguy.com Mike Haubrich, FCD

Nice theme, Hemant. Did you do your own banner?

  • NalosLayor

Nothing personal — I don’t have a real problem with the new design, but the new design looks a LOT less professional in my opinion. Much more like a basic modified blogger template instead of a cohesive site.

This is completely unrelated, but I just stumbled upon a random appearance of the FSM. Check out 1:38 of this video It is a clip from the British show IT Crowd.

So? Nothing stays the same. I think the new look will definitely take some getting used to. Black & White and Red. Quite different from the cool pale blue background I’ve become accustomed to.
Maybe I should re-write this in Haiku?

  • Anne

I think it’s dark and ugly. Unfriendly to say the least. And I liked your pic as well. Try, try again is my advice.

  • http://www.heathenz.com Kevin

It isn’t easy to see where one post ends and the other begins on the home page… After the side bar gets fixed, that’s all I have to complain about for now…

  • sc0tt

Seems unfriendly to me too… even kind of spooky.

  • http://www.purduenontheists.com Jennifurret

I agree, the site seems unfriendly and “spooky” now. The black-red-white scheme is just too harsh compared to the calm blue and the photo of your smiling face (awww, where’d that go?). If I had to come up with a suggestion, I would say at least change the black to a mid-gray, make the gray already here a little darker to differentiate more between posts, and change the banner to look more like the last one (except good quality instead of a jpeg).

  • BZ

No offense, but… ick. The old layout was better.

  • http://www.purduenontheists.com Jennifurret

…My comment about changing the light gray to emphasize different posts is completely jibberish, since posts aren’t divided that way. So…I don’t have a suggestion, but I think there needs to be a more obvious way to see where one post ends and another begins.

    *nag nag nag*

  • Siamang

    I agree… we’re missing a photograph.

I like that we can have avatars… though I’m not sure how to make mine.

It could use some warming up.

I like the religious symbols… I think it says something closer to what we are to have all of those, and not just a reference to one or two. It encourages people to think more broadly about the claims of the religions of the world.

  • http://friendlyatheist.com Hemant Mehta

Definitely taking note of all the comments.

There are a *lot* of things that need to be fixed or changed and we couldn’t do them all at once.

I hope people will like it more once the other changes are added in!

  • http://agersomnia.blogspot.com Agersomnia

    Your pic is missing, Mehta….

I have no prob. with black, but if it’s an issue, maybe a dark, marine blue would do. Blue is a good color!

  • http://deleted Richard Wade

    Negatives:
There’s no preview box in the comments section. That was one of the best improvements in the old site. It’s hard to proofread my comment in the working comment box with all the html stuff in the way.

Whoever started the fad of using light gray text should be fired. The recent comments in the side bar, rendered in light gray text are a challenge for anyone with less than perfect eyesight. Why should we have to squint at the screen?

What does the red “Go” button do? What should be typed into the box next to it? It needs a label.

    Positives:
The wider column for the posts and comments is easier to read and will make the pages not so vertically long. Will that allow more posts to remain on the front page? Red highlighted linked phrases are easier to see.

I like the use of the “atheist A” in your banner, and that you kept it white like the rest of the logo. Are the little symbols of the various religions like a welcome for religious people to visit?

  • Margy

I agree with Siamang’s and Richard Wade’s comments.

I liked the appearance of the other site better, but will try getting used to this one if you will just please repost your photo. I miss your cute, friendly, smiling face!

  • LeAnn

I like the look of the new site although I would agree that the dark colors make it less “friendly”. Overall, though, I like it.

  • http://skepticsplay.blogspot.com miller

Nice! Makes me wish I had the skills to redesign my site.

I like the dark colors (dark is not evil), but I think maybe it’s just a bit too dark. Maybe we can have some sort of medium-dark blue, like the color of the banner? Great banner, too, by the way. Did you make it yourself?

Since you no longer have a picture in the banner, you could put one on the sidebar maybe.

Major problems: The recent comments are gray? Gray = bad. Also, each recent comment takes like 6 lines on the sidebar. They should be more compact than that.

  • http://noadi.blogspot.com Noadi

Rather liking the new look. Got to agree it does seem a little less friendly, but much more stylish.

  • Brian G

I actually like this a lot more. I miss your perty face, but this one shows up a lot better on my page without looking like there were coding issues. Not that I actually know what I’m talking about..

  • Jacob Dink

    Looks good.

  • The Unbrainwashed

I hate this new look so much, that I’m probably going to come here less. It’s not horrible, but the old one was just so much better. The graphic at the top is harsh looking. THe color scheme altogether is confusing because all the red just seems to converge. It’s difficult to tell where one post starts and the other ends.

    PLEASE CHANGE BACK!

A lot of things are still changing. The new look isn’t done just yet. Things like spacing between posts and the color schemes are fixable :)

    Don’t leave just yet!
