I am still trying to figure out if American Christianity has actually changed this much since I quit going to church in the 1980s or if a few isolated assholes just get a lot of press because controversy gets ratings.

This just makes me think that many people who claim to be christians either don’t beleive or they are worried that their god is a puny little diety who can’t get things done without their help.

I doubt any of my old Christian friends would be so mean even on the internet, although I guess some of the people I did not know very well may have been meaner than I thought they were. My atheist friends would not be so mean either. I really don’t know why everyone is so mean these days. It’s really depressing. Mean people suck, whether or not they believe in God and whether they are mean to your face or online.

These are the sorts of statements that are revolting to (most) believers and skeptics alike. How did these people survive long enough to reach reproductive age? Oh wait, at least one of them presumably still hasn’t, or is in for a big surprise…

Well, you and I have, and we, as some old guy has said too many times, “have the scars to prove it.”

The hatred spewed by some Christians over this lawsuit serves to drive home their real thought processes: Hate for religion. FoxNews should read them on the air.

I can attest that we Atheists stand up and denounce Atheists who are idiots. Some of us do that way too much. Many of us are hyper-critical of our own activists and activism methods, and that’s for the best. We tend to behave better for it, I believe. That and we don’t have an ideology that inspires bad behavior.

But often really energetic Atheist activists quit activism out of frustration with all of the back-seat driving and Monday-morning quarterbacking that goes on between us. Some of it has been VERY heated and dramatic.

I have often suggested to some of the more aggressive critics among us that we forgive and move on. When our people screw up, it’s almost always minor. Our track record is clean. We’re good people, but even the most successful activists among us have already made lots of big errors along the way. The trick is to not give up in the face of all that.

This is how our movement has evolved, I believe. We don’t give up so easily.

Really, I am not sure the “fight” is about who believes in God or not. Or maybe it shouldn’t be. It should be about who acts like an ass and who acts like a compassionate human being.

I don’t think that distinction exists to some of these people. What we would call acting like an ass is righteous behavior, warrior for Christ stuff and completely justified by the Bible and God.

If they need to pray despite their god being omnipotent, is it any surprise that they think that writing a law would control the god? And if the politicians think that they can give us things like social security just by passing a law that says we have it (as opposed to, ya know, actually funding it sufficiently), is it any surprise that they think that writing a law can control other fictional entities?

Most of these came from .yahoo or similar e-mail addresses, nothing to do about them. The ones with identifiable address extensions are more fun. The first identifiable one was from an AirGuard base with a .mil extension. I just sent their public affairs officer a note asking if it was a proper use of a government computer. A lot of these dingbats dont realize they can lose their jobs by sending stupid e-mails on company systems. I am getting a sick pleasure out of getting these people in trouble. Forgive me.
