What *Isn’t* Part of the War on Christmas?

Does anyone else feel like the media is drawn to anyone who speaks in favor of atheism this time of year?

Every minor dissent is seen as a contribution to the War on Christmas…

    I think it’s good to get attention. But I don’t know how good it is to receive it as a “war on christmas” instead of as freedom of speech.

    Every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of Bill O’Reilly.

    As long as Billo and his cerebrally challenged fans get to frame this completely bogus debate, then anything secular said between Thanksgiving and New Years Day will be condemned as part of the “War on Christmas.” The media thrives on controversy. People have an annoying tendency to be friendly and to get along around Christmas, so the media starts to have withdrawal symptoms from not enough conflict. Even if seculars fell silent, William the Concocter and his ilk would contrive grievous assaults on their Holiest of Days out of the air, just to feed their lust for self-righteous, chest-thumping, finger-wagging, oh-bewaring, mark-my-wording, and ratings-boosting indignation.

    If we could learn to use these opportunities strategically to inform the public about atheism and correct some of the many misconceptions, it might be worth actually participating in this “war.”

    A “War on Christmas” is about as meaningful as a “War on Mondays” or the Bushism “A War or Terr’r”. You can’t wage war of opinion or thought, it’s just a ridiculous extension of the idea of fighting oppression or fighting for freedom.

    The “War on Christmas” was started many years ago by the Christians when they annexed Yule and Winter Solstice, changed their names, but kept the trees, and lots of yummy food.

    It isn’t a war unless there is a declaration of war. Dubya could tell you that, he’s a war President after all.

    Unless the air force is dog fighting Santa on Christmas Eve over the White House then it really doesn’t count. That would be cool though.

    This whole “Happy Holidays” thing started it, and Billo was there to protest it. I don’t even think atheists really had anything to do with it! This type of Christian acts like nobody else celebrates any holiday but Christmas during this time of the year. You try and explain that to this type of fundie and you get the “This is a Christian nation” bit, and no amount of 1st Amendment or Treaty of Tripoli discussion will ever convince them otherwise.

    It’s funny, but I think that Christians believe that freedom of religion was only meant for them.

    Really you don’t have to speak in favor of atheism. You need only fail to kowtow *to* Christmas and Christianity to be considered part of the “War on Christmas”. Hence the constant badgering of anybody who dare say “Happy Holidays” rather than “Merry Christmas” (how dare they acknowledge there’s more than one holiday this time of year and not fawn over just ours???).

    But when you go so far as to speak in favor of atheism you may as well paint a target on yourself.
