Say what you will about Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, one courageous thing he did was to require pharmacists to fill prescriptions in Illinois — they couldn’t refuse giving you the morning-after pill, for example, because they didn’t believe it was moral to take them.

Unfortunately, the Illinois Supreme Court is now going to hear a case that could overturn that law.

    This cartoon is closer to reality than you might want to think.

    I prescribed Plan B (a high dose oral contraceptive, designed to terminate a pregnancy if given within ~48-72h of suspected conception – a legal alternative to RU-486 at the time) for a 12 year old patient of mine who was raped by her father. The pharmacist refused to fill the Rx because he felt like this was abortion and therefore murder. Also, the pharmacist said, “what’s a 12 year old need with Plan B?” Like it was any of his business.

    Long story short, I was able to get the Rx filled at a different pharmacy. And, the girl is now in foster care… thankfully.

    The Scientologists have a grudge against psychiatry, though they profess to accept the legitimacy of non-psychiatric medicine. Wikipedia has an article on Medical claims in Scientology doctrine which describes the CoS as having a much broader conception of psychiatric medicine than mainstream medicine does. For instance, Scientologists have been known to call aspirin a psychiatric medicine, and therefore a villainous one.

    Another legacy of a failed administration, I would hope this could and will be reversed in the coming months. I am certainly glad I moved to a small country in Europe and do not have to put up with such BS

    Thanks for the cite!

    What I was thinking about when coming up with this cartoon was that although Bush and company are thinking “anti-abortion” via Christianity when developing these oppressive laws, they’re not considering (or don’t care about) the repercussions of a rule that can be interpreted subjectively by anyone of any belief system. In other words, this is the classic slippery slope.

    Funny how none of those who refuse to sell/prescribe birth control have moral objections to Viagra, Cialis, etc.

    I have big plans to take advantage of all of this. First I will go to pharmacy school. Then I will get a job as a pharmacist. Then I will announce that I am a Christian Scientist and therefore unable to dispense any medication. I will have the easiest job in the world.
