No where in Article II, section I of the constitution , does it state that the oath of office be taken on the Bible. Neither do the words, “so help me god” appear in the oath.

Where did this “tradition” of using the Bible originate?

Not necessarily. Change the term to ‘secular muslim’. There are, indeed, secular Jews; there are, indeed, secular Catholics (e.g.,I believer Prof. John Dominic Crossan is). Out of a billion ‘muslims’, there are no secular muslims? I’d be surprised.

for the sake of completeness, since Miko stated the rule but quoted the other part, I’ll quote the 20th Amendment:
“The terms of the President and Vice-President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January . . . and the terms of their successors shall then begin.”

mikespeir: No, technically he was made president by the clock striking noon, not by the oath. However, as Article II states:

Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

So, basically he was president, but wasn’t technically allowed to execute the duties of the office. And I say technically since it would involve the Supreme Court ruling against him on it, which is unlikely since the U.S. no longer follows the spirit, let alone the letter, of the Constitution.

So, does this mean we didn’t have a President for a day and a half or does it mean we still don’t have a legit President? Me? I’m gonna pretend all’s cool and that Obama’s firmly in charge.
