At the moment the American public is in middle of a debate as to how to deal with the rise, over the past few decades, of an organized and open gay community. In light of this new reality how does one go about maintaining a fair and just society? There are a lot of complicated issues that people of good will are going to take different positions on. Is it an injustice to not have gay marriage? Keep in mind that I, a heterosexual man, cannot marry another man at the moment either so technically speaking everyone is getting the same thing at the moment. Am I oppressing homosexuals when I use words like husband, wife, father or mother? On the flip side am I being oppressed when homosexuals try to stop me from using these words? As a believer in the free society, I support having this debate and I support having the government out of the way. The moment a government funded school attaches its name to a GLBT event then the government is taking a specific side. On the flip side schools should not be stopping gay students from dancing with their partners at formal dances. That would also be taking a stance.

Benzion N. Chinn, if that is so then should they support any kind of dance or social event? A dance for GLBT and their friends is not promoting a religious or anti-religious view. It really has nothing to do with religion at all except that many religious people will set themselves up in opposition to the idea of equality for homosexuals. They don't have to do this.

As for encouraging fundies to push their own agendas I really don't see that they need more encouragement but they are entitled to push for whatever changes they see fit. That is what freedom of speech allows.

If the school’s name is associated with the event than the school must be seen, as in some sense, endorsing the event. Regardless of your views on homosexuality in the public sphere, the government should not be taking sides and taxpayer funds should not be going into such efforts. For one things this will only encourage Fundamentalists to try to push for government funding for their agendas. Just as we do not want schools supporting bible readings or stealth Christian abstinence proms we should not want schools supporting gay dances.

Worse than sodomy? (Clutches pearls in shock and horror)
No, really. Tell me what you mean by that!

For teen-agers, any form of sex that can result in pregnancy is worse than sodomy.

The IFI makes it sound like the school was condoning sodomy on the dance floor. Meanwhile, they say nothing about “straight” dances like Homecoming and Prom at which (I assure you) far worse things go on.

We just had a "Diversity Dialog" last week at the small private college where I work in east TN. It was well attended, and we had many positive remarks. The students just didn't think it was long enough! So we're going to have a follow up, a smaller one, in April. The smart kids, the leaders on campus get it. It's the ones who have been indoctrinated since birth, and don't ever question anything who don't get it. But if the larger community in this area gets wind of what we're doing, it won't be pretty. All those bible thumping letters to the editor of our conservative newspaper will start. Then I'll have to start rebutting, but they won't listen...it's in the bible...blah, blah, blah. I get so tired.....
