What Happened to Fundies Say the Darndest Things?

Once, there was a hilarious website called Fundies Say the Darndest Things! which chronicled embarrassing quotations said by Fundamentalist Christians in chat rooms, blog comment threads, and their own websites.

On March 1st, the website went into “read only” mode unable to be updated.

It’s been a good run, but the FSTDT archive is going into readonly-mode effective Mar 1, 2009. Thank you everyone who has contributed to the archive over the years :)

Was FSTDT coming to an end? Not quite.

A new site popped up in its place (with a slightly different URL) — but it was missing the Top 100 quotations and the look and feel of the old site. (Maybe that was a good thing.)

That site is slowly getting back up to speed. When the new site began, webmaster Distind wrote this:

No, I’m not going to let the site die
No, I didn’t have anything to do with it
No, I don’t know what it happend
Yea, I am working on getting it all back up, in fact, I may manage more here in a few weeks.

He’s getting there. Within a week or two, voting will be allowed again and a new top 100 will be born.

So what went wrong with the old site?

The old owner of the site decided to shut it down, plain and simple. Distind, an administator for the site, says in an email that he wasn’t informed about this, but he did have access to the database and managed to save the archives just in time. The old owner hasn’t been reachable for several months now.

All hail Distind for salvaging a wonderful collection of bad evidence and weak arguments.

Check out the new site, donate to it if you’d like, and let Distind know if you have any suggestions.

Now, the more important question: How can he make money off the new site…? It’d be nice to see it succeed and not have to worry about someone taking it down. If the site saw a profit, that would definitely help.

Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, you can see some of the best FSTDT quotations acted out here.

    Quote# 61166
The Rapture is Only Days Away

This prophecy was issued yesterday! I guess we’re all in deep, deep doo-doo if we don’t repent real quick like.

I was a moderator at FSTDT and spent a lot of time there until a few months ago, when my workplace suddenly banned the site from access (ironically, as a “hate speech” site — presumably because of the material quoted therein and being held up to ridicule by the site).

Between this obstacle and my own lame home computer setup (and lack of time on the weekends recently because of a new relationship), I hadn’t been there in quite a while. I’m delighted that Distind was able to arrange for a new FSTDT to arise, phoenix-like, from the ashes — and I hope that Yahweh, the old FSTDT’s absentee owner, is all right.

Now, the more important question: How can he make money off the new site…?

cafepress.com – he could create shirts, coffee mugs, magnets, etc. with the site logo and some ‘choice quotes’ that people could buy. The up-side, no overhead/start-up expenses.

BTW – I’m waiting for you to make some “I sold my soul for this Friendly Atheist (insert item name here)” stuff, I want a coffee mug and a tee shirt. ;)

I’ll tell what I know but it’s been a while.

I knew Yahweh (the site owner) personally. Somewhat with my help he made some major changes to the underlying code of the site as sort of just a computer science experiment. (We are both huge nerds.) It was mostly successful, except it caused the site to occasionally go down and restart. I thought it was a simple thing to fix but he didn’t seam to care enough to fix it and let it be. I believe he was sort of amused at the results. The site started degrading in performance and up time, and it was only a matter of time before it needed fixed or shut down.

About 6 months ago he found a better job and moved back to his home town. I’ve been expecting the site to go down completely since then as I hadn’t heard from him until a few weeks ago, and he’s doing fine so don’t worry about him.

And I can tell you if this new site does make money, he will be kicking himself for not thinking of it first.

I love this quote from the site

All men are born equal but atheists are only half men. Man consists of mind, soul and spirit. Atheists do not have a spirit (this makes them worth 2/3 of a normal hum man) and they hardly have a soul either as they can feel little more then hatred, geek and pathetic depressions. (no Christian can ever be depressed since we are Holy Children of God, depressed people are laughable) No atheist can never be in love, or ever feel true love. (their love is only lust and/or sadism) This makes them about 1/3 man. Also we all know that it’s gay to be atheist and gays are not men, their are assheads who should terminated as well as other threats to the society. (like commies, feminists, masons and immigrants)

To sum it up, my dear amerikkkan fat asstheist neard with cola: You are a failure!

Glad to here he’s alright. Haven’t heard a peep in a while.

I’ve got a few plans on turning a profit on the site, but I’d rather not toss adds on if I can avoid it. When push comes to shove what I’m paying for hosting isn’t all that much and I’m willing to manage it myself, but some of the dev tools I’m trying to get a hold of don’t quite fall in the same price range.

Oh, David, if you check this again I didn’t get the forums back together yet and they’re currently hosted here: http://fstdt.proboards.com/
Which should be easy enough to get to since the filter was on the old site.

Nick: You should post that to the FSTDT’s forum. Some people over there are wondering if Yahweh is still OK.

Uh … I thought Yahweh is a girl?

  • anti-nonsense

that’s what I thought too, but apparently not.

  • MysticalChicken

Count me in the “buh? I thought Yahweh was female” camp as well.
