Atheist Bus Campaign in… Ireland!

The Humanist Association of Ireland has put up this ada inside of Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) buses trains:

ireland

It reads:

UNBELIEVABLE

Did you know that you must take a religious oath in order to become a judge — or the President — in Ireland?

In effect, this rule disbars up to 250,000 Irish citizens who are non-believers.

It’s discrimination. It’s unfair. And it has to end.

Humanist Association of Ireland. A voice for the non-religious in Ireland.

Nicely done, Irish: Not knocking down the religious, just playing up the fact that atheists deserve equal rights and Church and state ought to be kept separated.

I hope the campaign leads to bigger and better campaigns.

I thought that’s what it’s always been about.

A small correction: the DART is a train service, not buses. (see dart.ie)

Another bit of Humanist news from the Dublin area: from next semester (2009-10) there will be a Humanist Society at University College Dublin, the largest university in Ireland. It’s been approved, but not yet fully organized.

    Duly noted. Thanks!

That’s awesome! I really hope that the local government takes notice of this.

Unfortunately the ad does not do the cause much good.

    1) They do not back up their claim on the website or the poster (not that there is much space)

    2) The claim is wrong. It is a very common misconception in Ireland that they do not cater for atheists, they do even in a court of law (right down to not requiring jurors swear in on a bible). The fact is, being that the country is overwhelmingly religious there’s been no case of an atheist judge or president to date.

The very least the group can do it back up claims with cold hard facts.

I took this photo and saw the interesting referrer logs that pointed me here. I’d heard about atheist bus campaigns in other countries and was pleasantly suprised to see this ad in my home town of Dublin.

    Keep up the good work!
