Michele Bachmann Lies About a Founding Father, Obama, etc.

Trying to catch Michele Bachmann (R-MN) in a lie is about as hard as finding candy in a candy store.

Check out what she said in Congress the other day (courtesy of Chris Rodda):

… George Washington, our first President, demonstrated that he was not offended by the image of the risen Christ. In fact, our Nation’s first President let his views be known quite clearly on his inauguration by a prayer which George Washington himself gave at his inauguration. He said, and I quote, Mr. Speaker:

‘Almighty God, we make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large. And finally, that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.’

Mr. Speaker, our first President, George Washington, insisted on his inauguration day as the first President of this great country, that unless the citizens of our country imitate the example of Jesus Christ, that we would not be a happy Nation. What a clear contrast between our first President and our current President.

Of course, Washington never said such a thing.

Snopes sheds some light on this:

The letter from which the “prayer” passage was taken was written not by George Washington, but by his aide de camp, David Cobb… finally, the wording has been altered to make the passage appear to be a prayer addressed to Almighty God, when in fact was a direct statement from Washington to a governor.

Compare the original and modified versions:

ORIGINAL:

Now I make it my earnest prayer that God would have you and the State over which you preside, in His holy protection, that He would incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government, to entertain brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow citizens and the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the field, and finally, that He would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. I have the honor to be, with much esteem and respect, Sir, your Excellency’s most obedient and most humble servant. George Washington.

MODIFIED:

Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United states at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Does Bachmann have a staff? Do they do any research before she makes a speech?

That wasn’t the only misstatement, though. She also said this:

“I wonder, Mr. Speaker, if President Abraham Lincoln, one of President Obama’s heroes, would have said overseas that he believed America was a nation of secularists…”

He never said that, either. This is what Obama said:

I’ve said before that one of the great strengths of the United States is — although as I mentioned we have a very large Christian population — we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation, or a Jewish nation, or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values.

Bachmann said several other things that have no basis in reality — Rodda has a lengthier analysis of these lies.

Which ones of you elected her?

can someone be tossed out of congress on the basis of stupidity, ignorance, dishonesty, or just generally sucking? usually people write their congress person, i’d like to write a letter addressed to every voter in her district detailing her stupidity and dishonesty. also, can we file a defamation lawsuit on her on behalf of George Washington?

Go to Jackson, Alabama and find me a white person. You know nothing about the South, LOL.

Ha. I actually didn’t like that line and I’ve changed it since.

“about as hard as finding a white person in Alabama”

Have you ever been to Alabama? The Black population of Alabama is about 26%, versus about 13% for the US as a whole. Alabama is among the Blackest states in the Union.

Granted, most of Alabama’s Blacks are poor and rural, but that just means you’ve committed a class faux pas in addition to a race faux pas.

Is this the same crazy person who was talking about government run re-education camps? Or is this a diferent crazy?

  • http://noadi.blogspot.com Noadi

Same crazy person. She’s a never ending supply of absolute insanity and is in incredibly scary that she’s in congress.

Would you expect anything else from these types of Christians? Many of them are told lies from the pulpit every Sunday. Sadly, they do not bother to research anything that conflicts with their theocratic views.

can someone be tossed out of congress on the basis of stupidity, ignorance, dishonesty, or just generally sucking?

Talking from the other side of the pond, if we threw out all stupid, ignorant, dishonest people, the only person left would be the cleaner.

I’m a Minnesotan but I sure as hell didn’t vote for the idiot.

What was she trying to “sell” with this?

Btw; what is said by these fools is documented and made history…that is exactly how fundies knowingly behave to change the history of our country.

They know that we can all blog and talk about it all we want, but that really doesn’t matter, history and what will be quoted as fact and used to make laws and teach future generations is again, what stated by the many fools in Congress, is documented and archived as fact.

“Does Bachmann have a staff? Do they do any research before she makes a speech?”

They do research. Unfortunately it’s all done at the Christian book store and Christian blogs. There is so much misinformation out there it is hard to tell whether the speakers are being intentionally dishonest or just choosing bad sources. With Bachmann, I would believe either one; she’s ignorant and dishonest.

The original authors of the sources are definitely liars and cheats, though, and need to be outed for what the are.

I am from MN, but not in Bachmann’s district. I wish I had a chance to vote against her, though.

  • Sock

You know what sucks most? The truth doesn’t matter. She has said it, and now for those who want it to be true, it -will- be true.

Sigh. I really hate Christians. :( They’re so good at putting their fingers in their ears and going “BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH I CAN’T HEAR YOU!”

  • Nick Wallin

I’m from Minnesota as well, but she’s not in my district. What a disgrace…

  • Hank Bones

She’s from my parents’ district in MN. I was in the midst of a move during the election, and unfortunately decided not to register at their address. Not that my vote would have kept her out of office. I’m not sure what the German/Norwegian equivalent of WASP is, but its there, and it votes Bachman.

  • Cafeeine

The worst problem is, I think, in the coming years, Bachmann will become quotable material by all kinds of nutters who will cling to her status as a point of authority. And since most people will not go beyond confirming that she did in fact say this, there is grave potential for future abuse of reality.

  • Epistaxis

Go to Jackson, Alabama and find me a white person.

You’re absolutely right, except that the Jackson you’re thinking of is probably the one in Mississippi.

  • Breezy

She does not even deserve to live in this great country, much less hold a position in Government. And we wonder why some of our young people are so screwed up. Her types are not real Christians. They are,in my opinion, key contributors to the very reason why so many turn away from Christianity. Her sorry behind has a day coming if my Bible is correct.

I just judged her, and I know that is not right, but our great country is hanging by a thread, and these deceitful self righteous nuts need to stop it now! If there was ever a time when we, as American people, needed to work together to restore our country, it is now.

President Obama is a good man. He is working so hard for us. Just to have a President that actually know that he is employed by us, to work for us, for the first time in YEARS, to have a President with a vison for America and it’s people, and the intelligence to realize it, feels so good even though times are hard. We cannot afford to sit back and allow these venomous heathens to lie on him 24/7 without calling them out. Please continue to SPEAK UP AMERICA!

  • Old Beezle

And we wonder why some of our young people are so screwed up. Her types are not real Christians. They are,in my opinion, key contributors to the very reason why so many turn away from Christianity.

    haha–not a TRUE Xtian. Funny.

I don’t know if I’m supposed to laugh at Ms. Bachmann, feel sorry for her or be sad that we have an elected official that is so delusional.

  • http://www.kristenmary.com Kristen Mary

Not Me!! Before I knew who she was I was at a little suburb parade and my husband forbade me from even taking a sticker from her as she walked by. LOL

  • LarryB

Bachmann is not dangerous. I think Oprah said it best: “I believe in the intelligence of the American people.” She lives on a very nice golf course near Stillwater, MN…some of the members actually aim their shots at her house which is on the 17th hole I think. HA!
Finally, why hasn’t anyone figured out why Oprah started her own network? She will be a huge force next year in the continued success of President Obama.
