The Atheist’s Business Card

Um. Good idea, but the text needs a little reworking. As it stands, you’re only refusing religious rites if the medical treatment kills or wounds you.

I don’t like the “No God, No fear.” Sounds to me like the kind of thing somebody who’s afraid there might be a god would say.

@mikespeir: Well, it should be followed up by “Know gods, know fear.” It makes the worthwhile point that religion is the ultimate FUD tactic.

I don’t mind if people pray for or over me. Sure, I’d be offended if they prayed for me to convert or something like that, but if someone knows I’m doing poorly and says they’ll pray for me, I just say “thanks”. I was raised without religion so it’s not the trigger for me that it is for many atheists. I don’t believe in it and it has no power over me. No big deal. As I see it, someone praying for me is just them trying to be nice. I think of it as a cultural difference I guess.

Still, interesting idea.

Oh, forgot to add, my husband would love that card, lol! He *was* raised with religion shoved down his throat so for him, it’s an issue.

Is this a business card? It looks almost like an advance directive! Perhaps this too means it should be reworded: you wouldn’t want to imply that religious rites are effective as medical intervention now would you…

I think it’s a play off of a common religious phrase, seen on many bumper stickers and crummy church signs: “No God, No Peace, Know God, Know Peace”.

As someone who had to carry a stupid No Blood card my whole life, this is a nice change. That said, I see no point in carrying a card around stating I’m an atheist or in an atheist “party”. If someone wishes to waste their time by praying for me when I’m dying or dead then that’s on them.

My friends would send any religious person away from me before they had a chance to say a word anyhow.

And somewhere, please, tell me there is another graphic designer out there who is an atheist? Some of this stuff is just so poorly designed it makes me cringe.

So, it’s kind of ridiculous. Plus, if theists carried a card that said ‘please pray for me’, you’d be blogging about how intolerant it is that they would ask or expect people who might be atheists to pray for them. Yet, you think its your right to control what other people do.

I agree, it would probably backfire. Personally, if I were injured, I wouldn’t care what mumbo jumbo somebody was doing, as long as they are stopping the bleeding, calling an ambulance and they don’t get any magic dust on the wound.

Oh, I don’t think so. I’ve prayed over dying people at their request. I didn’t mind at all. I did it to comfort them. After they died, I went on to help the next person, hopefully with something more useful.

Nice idea, but it language needs to be smoothed over.
Combine this with a Get Out of Hell Free card, and we’d really have something here!
