Baroquem - it's simplified, certainly. If it were really stated just as it is in the cartoon, no one would believe it. But just because something is disguised by several layers of theology doesn't mean that it doesn't boil down to this.

Even if we ignore the specifics of the cartoon, the reasoning the cartoon preacher uses is still perfectly descriptive. Every day, we see claims being made in the name of one religion or another. These claims are invariably proven wrong, and then we see a shifting of the goal posts. I can't tell you the number of times I have been told that if I would just, oh just, read the Bible, the Truth of God would be revealed to me. Well, I have read the Bible. Oh, well then, I didn't read it with the right frame of mind. I have to believe in the Truth of God before I read the Bible for it to be revealed to me.

Do you deny that this happens? That these claims are made?

I have found this cartoon to be completely descriptive of religious reasoning - both in remembering how I, personally, defended my faith while I was still a believer, as well as what I experience now in my discussions with theists.

Eh, no. That 'logic' only holds for a very shallow understanding of the Bible and Christian belief. It's as much a caricature as the picture of the preacher is.

It is sad that there is some truth to this. I would not go to a church that was like that. And sadly, there are some that give out broken promises.

I have a very small screen on my little netbook. When I clicked over to this page from Twitter, all I saw was your header and "Biblical Logic in a Nutshell". Then I scrolled down and got the angry preacher pointing his finger, and I thought that was the whole point. Upon further scrolling, I got to read the words, but I like the first impression I got even better: Christianity in a nutshell is just standing behind the cross sweating from fist-pounding finger-pointing.

And, silly me, I thought we actually needed healthcare. Such a worldly thought.
