Secular Student Alliance Introduction Video

Several months ago, Dano Johnson (the director of the wonderful, animated version of Flatland) and I began to talk about making a video in support of the Secular Student Alliance. He volunteered his services at no charge and stuck with us even when we requested changes late in the game.

I’ll spare you all the additional details that get discussed when this sort of video gets made :) Needless to say, we had a lot of talks about the content and I hope it’s worth the effort that Dano’s team put into it.

I think he did a wonderful job and I am proud to finally share the final product with everyone:

If you like it, please share it with others!

Remember: The SSA is still ~$5,000 away from meeting the Todd Stiefel $50,000 match. The thermometer in the righthand sidebar shows our progress and you can help us get to the top!

My two cents: the cartoon is three heaping doses of awesome. The announcer and generic, inoffensive background music sound like an instructional video, in a bad way. But that’s a very minor criticism. All in all, very cool.

The cartoon animation and plot-line are great! The voiceover bit is just not as visually appealing as the cartoon. It’s not bad, it’s just not great. It’s saying the right things though! Could just do with being a bit snazzier.

That laugh will haunt my nightmares.

I have horrible flashbacks of Barney…

Apart from Big U’s voice, awesome.

    But do they have punch?

Great video Hemant, I’ll post it to the homepage of RRS soon.

Can using Ad-block Plus (as shown in the website screenshot) be ethically justified? I do it, but I’ve always assumed it makes me a bastard :)

I do wish that thermometer indicator were updated. It says “Last updated 10/27/09″, and I know it’s changed at least twice since then, so I have no confidence the figure shown is the most recent.

It makes me want to go back to school just so I can join.

I thought the cartoon was a bit jejeune. What you really need to appeal to students is something more intellectual and sophisticated…

Like a skit based on Dracula’s line from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein:

“What we need is young blood… and brains.”
    :)

A question that came to mind: Does it grab the attention of your target audience?

It looks great from my perspective, but I will have to show it to some teens and see what they think.

I loled at the aborted fetus.

    That sentence stands alone.

Good, up until Big U. Maybe I’d get it if I were from the US, but to me it just seems really naff. Why not have her approached by a real secular student? Also agree with Shawn on the music.

  • JJR

I agree, “Big U” was a bit to much Deux Ex Machina (pardon the pun). Should’ve just had some attentive atheists rescue her from the woo peddlers, or give the woo peddlers the beat-down…that would’ve been funny.

I never formally joined the Atheists/Agnostic group as an undergrad, but I did hang out with the Sci-Fi/Fantasy gaming geeks and SGA nerds, most of whom were coincidentally atheist.

Had to laugh at the picture of the Blasphemous Bake Sale.

sackbut — That’s my fault. The SSA’s thermometer is updated (as was my $ amount) but I had forgotten to update the date on my website.

    It’s fixed now!

yay! they used my student group for the picture! that blasphemous bake sale was so much fun
