However the US Episcopal Church is headed by a woman, Katharine Jefferts Schori. The conservatives if anything are going backwards (the Southern Baptists use to allow women more ministerial powers). The Catholics and the Orthodox which make up by far the majority of Christians worldwide do not permit women to be priests. During my last few years in the United Church of Canada, the trend in clergy seemed to be towards women (some young, but a fair number of middle-agers as well). At least, all the interns that came through my congregation seemed to be lacking a Y chromosome. Of course, this is a denomination that also ordains gays and performs same-sex weddings. I dunno.
