Come Celebrate with Me at DePaul?

Next Tuesday, June 1st, I’ll be speaking at DePaul University in Lincoln Park (near downtown Chicago). The event is free, starts at 6:00 p.m., and takes place in Munroe Hall. The Facebook event page is here.

The event is sponsored by the DePaul University Secular Student Alliance — an exciting new group that began this past year!

But there’s one more reason to come!

I’m taking my last grad school final just hours prior to that — I’ll finally have my Master’s Degree :) It’s been five years since I started the Math Ed program at DePaul, so it’s about damn time. There will be some sort of fun celebration afterwards for anyone interested.

Side note: Next year, I’m gonna make all my students call me Master Mehta.

There was an Associated Press article about teaching teachers that came out last night. I was mentioned in it a few times…

    Congratulations, Hemant! I wish I could be there.

    The article was great. The comments were crazy, (yes, I know I have a serious problem that compels me to read comment sections on news articles), and it was bizarre how the opinions represented were so different. Someone wants to pay teachers more, someone else thinks they should be paid less, someone bemoans the end of segregation, someone else thinks Obama is evil, someone else thinks teachers should stop making learning fun for kids, someone else thinks learning should be *more* fun, someone else wants to bring back corporal punishment, someone else wants to bring back more art and music and healthy lunches!

    Honestly, reading the whole thing made me really glad I’m not a teacher. You’re a brave man, Hemant.

    Congratulations on your Master’s, Hemant. If I could afford it, I’d fly there and join in the celebration. Maybe you could set up a web cam so we in the outlands could see the revelry.

    You might not want to do that. While most Americans are apparently unaware of the fact, the use of “Master” as a title (in the manner of “Mister” or “Doctor”) denotes that the person is a male child.

    I grew up in the 60′s, and my grandparents often addressed correspondence to ‘Master’ – it’s not that obscure.

    I think the students will expect their professor to show up in Jedi robes and swing the Lightsaber of Reason about with great enthusiasm.

    Master Mehta,
    The subcultures of S & M/B & D also have the title of “Master”.
    Master & Mistress/slave, Top/bottom, Dom/sub, etc.
    If anyone says to you “Thank you Master. May I have another?” you might want to change your title.

    Congrats on the Master’s degree. I liked the article, though like JulietEcho I have a tendency to read the comments section, in which far too many comments were asinine. I’m not sure I’d be able to handle being a teacher, personally.
