Math Meets FSM

M.C. Escher would have been proud.

Mark Dow created a tessellation featuring the Flying Spaghetti Monster:

Wow. Colorful and gorgeous. The enlarged version looks even better.

If you really want to geek out, here’s the math behind how he created it.

When I buy a house, I know how I’m tiling my floors now.

I think Martin Gardner would be impressed as well.

My next quilt pattern! Love it.

BLASPHEMY! There is only ONE FSM

  • Daniel

I don’t see it…what am I supposed to be looking for?

  • DangerouslySafe

    Where can we get them?

  • Erp

    @daniel.

Take a look at just one piece and look for two black dots.

  • gwen

    Medusa, you read my mind!!

Medusa, gwen and other quilters: please, please send me a photo if you do a quilted variation of this. I would do one myself if I had some sewing skills.

FSM gotta be an aperiodic tiling though. :P

It’s not “Virgin Appears on Toast” but surely it implies there is an Intelligence out There…making math make interlocking squiggly lines.

BTW: “tessellation” sounds like something from a Scientology summer camp. I’m not sure I believe that’s a real thing.

BLASPHEMY! There is only ONE FSM

Perhaps the FSM theologians can come up with some kind of “multiple in One” concept similar to the Christian Trinity.

  • Claudia

Would look awesome for kids floors or bathroom mats.

The FSM is supreme: it can do whatever it wants! If it wants to exist several times at once it damn well will! There’s your theology!

Trying to impose petty bronze-age limitations on the FSM… The idea!

    Is there a T-Shirt yet???
    Please make on!

  • Steve

Please no! The trinity is one of the most fucked-up, illogical and ill-thought concepts in Christianity. Keep FSMism simple!

Perhaps a commandment saying the FSM shall only by represented in either single or tessellated images.

BLASPHEMY! There is only ONE FSM

Clearly you have not heard of the tridecaduality of the FSM.

Apologies if I miscounted the number of distinct but equal persons in the one FSM.

More apologies to any mathematical linguists if I came up with the wrong term for 32-ness.
