Food for Freethought 2010: Don’t Forget to Give

The Metro State Atheists in Colorado are running their annual Food for Freethought charity event next week!

This is the event in which you give them non-perishable foods (which will be donated), and they’ll give you a banned book. It’s awesome.

If you can donate food, books, or money, the relevant links can all be found here.

I applaud the Metro State Atheists for their initiative in the epicenter of fundamentalism!

On another note, here is a little symbolic opportunity I’m hoping to get some attention for:

NASA is letting the public vote for songs to be played on the 2nd-to-last space shuttle mission, from a selection of songs that have played once before on previous shuttle missions. Voting runs through the end of October 2010. (The final mission will play original songs submitted by musicians, voted on in February 2011 from the submissions.)

One of the options is “Imagine” by John Lennon. It is currently in 15th place out of 40. The top two songs will be played.

The main page for the project (with a cute animation) is https://songcontest.nasa.gov/ , and the direct link for voting is https://songcontest.nasa.gov/top40.aspx

Voting began a month ago, and several other songs have a huge lead right now, but if you can spread the word throughout the greater online atheist community, it could be achievable. The site doesn’t mention anything about restrictions on the number of times you can vote, and it appears that everyone can vote as many times as their level of dedication compels them to (which is probably how fans of the top songs got them so far ahead of all the other songs).

John Lennon’s “Imagine” is the inspiration for the ‘Imagine No Religion’ Freedom From Religion Foundation billboards (and 9/11 web images). Here are the lyrics:

    Imagine there’s no countries
    It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion, too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace
You, you may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you will join us
And the world will be as one
    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world
You, you may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you will join us
And the world will live as one

Surely this song’s message deserves more votes than “Magic Carpet Ride”. :)

I thought this was the event you mentioned earlier this year. I gave them a box of books a couple of months ago. Sounds like it’s going to be a great event.
