Another Twist on Coexisting

You already know about the “classic” Coexist bumper sticker:

But I just found out there’s a version of it just for Chicagoans:

I suppose if Cubs and White Sox fans can coexist, Christians, Jews, and Muslims should have no problem, right? :)

    I won’t comment on Cubs VS Socks, but the image reminded me of how the religious tolerance message is spreading. Not only to baseball rivalries.

    After several years of hiding my agnosticism (OK call me a coward)I finally secured an iron-on transfer that I will start to wear out in public. It has the word imagine over the word religion with N and O in bold red.

    I am ready to start the conversation with anyone who asks, and hopefully spread a few seeds of tolerance.

    Let’s not forget that even the Cubs and the Cardinals can coexist. It’s even OK to be a Cubs fan in St. Louis…we think they’re cute.

    Out of curiosity, would you care to elaborate on why you thinking “hiding” in agnosticism (whatever that means) is supposed to be cowardice? I guess I could be offended as an agnostic myself, but I think I’m more concerned by the idea that certain types of non-theism somehow aren’t “good enough” for others in that group.

    Except the White Sox are a major league baseball team and the Cubs are that silly little north side experiment in how many millennia can pass with no championships while still getting people to show up for games. So what’s to coexist in this case? We Sox fans are more than happy to pat the Cubs fans on their heads if that’s what they need.

    The social movement of coexist sounds great up front, but then again it will never work. Why? Well people wouldn’t believe in the religion that they believed in specifically if they didn’t think their god and supernatural mysticism wasn’t the best way. That innate feeling of irreconcilable superiority over another persons way to buddy up to the supernatural powers will always cause conflict in the end.

    Many atheists refer to agnostics as cowards. In the same way that many theists do. Refusing to take a polar position seems to draw the wrath of the both sides.

    No. Atheism isn’t a “polar position”. It is the same thing that you are espousing now: I don’t know for sure whether there’s a God or not, and I don’t believe it’s possible to prove or disprove it; but there’s no evidence for it, so I live my life like there isn’t one.” That’s what you believe, that’s what 99% of atheists believe, and THAT’S ATHEISM.

    Atheism/theism is binary; on/off; yes/no. Do you believe in God? If yes, you’re a theist, if not, you’re an atheist. “Agnosticism” is not a middle ground between these two; if you aren’t sure whether God exists, then you don’t believe in him. You’re an agnostic atheist.

    The reason it’s cowardly is not because you “aren’t taking a position”; it’s because you don’t call it what it is, for whatever personal reasons you have. Ask yourself if you would create such a convoluted semantical wiggle if someone asked you whether you believed Harry Potter was real. If the answer is no, then you should follow-up and ask yourself why you only do these dances when God is involved.

    My guess is, theistic propaganda is very, very good and pervasive, and most “agnostics” buy into the propaganda even though they aren’t theists; you don’t believe in God but you don’t want to associate with those filthy atheists. And that’s why it hurts the progress of atheism.
