I knew it was getting hotter this week…
At least it’ll all be better by Sunday!
But will it be a dry heat?
It’s funny, I was just listening to a WYNC podcast about papyrus recovered in Egypt where the number of the beast was called out as “616”. doh.
Lead melts at 621.43 °F. Church roofs are going to really suffer.
Love, love, LOVE this.
wow.lol so hard. I’m actually attending a rapture party tomorrow night with the Jacksonville Atheist Meetup where we will have a good time and watch as the christians(unfortunately) don’t go anywhere.
…I declare this day ‘Cosmic-Avenger Awareness Day’
** I am Alpha and Omega Ultimate Big-Lie from the Big-4 Monster Theisms
First and last — remember to limit claims about doomsday both in time and in geography. Before 1200 BCE with zoroastrianism, there were no end-of-days scenarios in the west. Though once introduced, the downtrodden, oppressed and revenge-filled could claim a religious ideology all their own.
The infection spread slowly from imperial Persian state religion (600 – 250 BCE) to anti-Macedonian propaganda by rebellious jews (140 BCE – 135 CE), on to xians (50 CE – today), to islam (600 CE – today). Now perhaps half the world’s population carries the doomsday virus if only latently. Unfortunately, every facet of western culture has been inflected and inflamed.
• Secularized as the all-too-real “MAD” (mutually assured destruction) or spewed from the mouths of televangelist liars: Revelation, “John”s copycat text (about 110 CE) can not be understood in isolation as demonstrated by Norm Cohn’s work: Cosmos, Chaos, and the World to Come [2nd ed Yale. 2000].
Apocalypses from a zoroastrian end of times (frashokereti), to the jewish 1 Enoch, to Revelation form a backbone for Cohn’s genealogy of morality, alienation and hatred projected into the innermost working of a wrongly moralized universe.
He chronicles mythopoeic jubilation of “the children of light” wishing for renewal through destruction of the world. And, they are granted a revenge satisfying prevision of seeing their enemies “the children of darkness” consigned to eternal torture.
• Understanding apocalypses within the near eastern group of religions lies in realizing that each gets created during a time of foreign invasion or occupation and sectarian violence. Each is a product of desires for revenge which can not be expressed except in words, words veiled out of fear in obscure symbols and arcane references.
A US fundie xian love affair with the State of Israel turns on a desire for a nuclear cataclysm to mark the end of the world (Armageddon) thus initiating a triumphal return for a fictional, self-righteous ego-inflated father figure, Christ the Judge.
There’s nothing healthy about the zoroastrian-jewish-xian-islamic myths of a god’s cosmic revenge. They are a product of nihilism, a poison absorbed by the West to its detriment for the last 2,000 years.
