Welcome to Patheos!

If you’re seeing this, then we’ve successfully migrated over!

We’re still working on importing all the 200,000+ comments from the old site, so many of the comments from the previous week may be missing from their respective posts.

The Friendly Atheist Forums will be up and running shortly!

The official site URL is now http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/

You can subscribe to the full RSS feed with this link (or keep using whatever you had before if it still works).

Take a look around, leave a comment, push a button or two. If you have any suggestions on (serious) fixes you’d like to see to this page, please let me know! It’ll take a while to work out all the kinks, but I want to deal with as many as I can right now.

Thanks, everyone :)

Hooray! The header is still there with the wonderful ambigram! (though I gotta figure out how to turn my monitor upside down for it to work) And the new comment service is no longer blocked by my office!

I’ve got what must be the best form of mild dyslexia.  Doesn’t affect my ability to read, but I can decipher text in any orientation, including reading the upside down part of the ambigram without standing on my head.

Ctrl + Alt + down arrow should flip you.  Try out the right and left and up as well.  By the way, this makes a great April Fool’s Day prank on your coworkers if they are not aware of the keystrokes to use :)

I must admit it’s nice to have such a mobile friendly version of the site. In particular the comments section displays much better on my phone now.

Why not just have your old domain name point to the new location? You don’t even have to have it hide the current location at all, just as a redirect, since your own domain name is far easier and cleaner to remember IMO.

It’s a little stiff and starchy, but I suppose once it gets a spin in the wash it’ll soften up. I’m still irritated about having to add a “I_” to my name, but at least I get an avatar now, which for the life of me I never managed on the other site.

Objects in blog may be larger than they appear. I’m guessing that halo is the size of a large pizza, in real life ;-)

        • http://religiouscomics.net/ Jeff P

Yes, its about the size of a large pizza with eggplant and mushroom toppings.  Since I trace my ancestry to a different part of the evolutionary tree than Adam and Eve, I’m not afflicted with original sin.  And since I haven’t sinned in real life (thus the halo) I’m destined to heaven if the Christians are right.  Its a pisser, though, having to spend eternity with that group.  Maybe I’ll have to do something about it.

Others have said the same thing, but I’ll confirm from my side as well that the full-feed RSS just automatically worked.

The new comments system means I can actually post, now, too (something in the old one would tell me the comment was accepted but never display it, and if I tried to submit it again it would say it detected a duplicate so I know it was accepted by the system in some way even though it never showed up, discovered that about a week ago on the “I’m moving post”).

Will they be adding “Atheism” to the “Religion Portal” header on the main page?  To the “Religion Traditions Faiths” section?   Are you going to get in on the “What do I really believe” section?

I’m still a little leery that we’re going to be given equal time / respect given the amount of changes they’ll have to make to add Atheism to the mix.  (ie:  they’ll have to create a whole new section under “Religion Traditions Faiths” because they’d better not put us under “NewReligions”)

There’s no “Religion Portal” on the main Patheos site that directs to blogs/articles from non believers.  Are they planning on adding a link for this?

This ‘Patheos” site sure doesn’t have much in the way of atheism. Luckily this blog was a ‘featured’ blog or else I wouldn’t have even found it through their webpage.

Agree with this.  I can not get to this blog from the main page in any way that I have tried.

Have not tried searching, but there seems to be no direct access.

Curious to see how this all pans out.  Some of the other religions clash, but we clash with them all. It will be an interesting position to be in on a website.

To be fair, almost every religion clashes. I think it’s just that people tend to overlook the differences to find similarities sometimes, and the people who do that should be able to do the same with us apostates.

Still, it could be interesting… This blog as a general rule doesn’t get massively heated in the comments sections, would be a shame if that changed too much.

        • Anonymous

Right, I agree Greg.  Just saying that everyone from any religion could have a bone to pick with us.

I hope for friendly banter, not comment wars and flame fests.

You should listen to the Podcast, Jake can get pretty smug and arrogant so the smug cartoon is a good fit.

Fortunately he knows he’s smug and arrogant, I often think he hams it up deliberately, and its fine because not taking himself too seriously is really part of his charm; that and the fact that he’s got three awesome guest hosts who he rotates through on a consistent basis (though we haven’t heard from Jeffrey [Geoffrey?] Jones in a while).  I may not always agree with what he says but I do find him often saying things that I’m thinking myself.

Haven’t ponied up for the Gold or Hardcore memberships to get the bonus content yet, I’ve been thinking about it though.

just testing ability to add image and see if it automatically resizes it.
Looks like it does.  The original was a larger animated image.  In such a case, it takes the first frame and resizes.

She’s purdy.  I hope I can catch her in an elevator at 4am sometime to ask her out for coffee.

Hey that’s my daughter your are talking about!  Just kidding.  It was just from an animated image I found on the internet as part of a tutorial of how to do image morphing.  I was curious if I could embed an animated gif image and I happened to have that image on my hard-drive.   Originally, that image morphed from her to an oriental girl.  A morphing girl would definitely be interesting to talk to over coffee.

I’m sure you meant to say “Asian woman”.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brian-Macker/518709704 Brian Macker

It’s perfectly acceptable to use the word in any other English speaking country other than the US.

All it refers to is things to the far east of Europe (at some period of time in history).   BTW, the landmass they live on is called Eurasia, not Asia.  There is no Asian continent, nor is it solely occupied by Asians.    If the Asians want to be hypersensitive about something maybe the way continents were defined is something to make a fuss about.    I very much doubt the Oriental girl looked anything like someone from the Near or Middle East, which are technically part of Asia.

The word is considered offensive purely because it is literally European centric from the point of view of location.   Well, fuck then stop calling me a westerner.   Also how stupid to think that the compass direction carries any connotation of inferiority.

It certainly doesn’t make much sense today (especially from the US) to refer to the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, etc. as oriental but then again no one uses orient to mean East either.

So Rich stop being so bigoted to thinking the only people on the internet are from the US.

“It’s perfectly acceptable to use the word in any other English speaking country other than the US. ”

Almost.  It is considered offensive in Canada, and (if I trust wikipedia on this) Australia.  I’ll give you the rest of the English speaking world, if you’ll change that ‘US’ to ‘North America’.

Although I do have to wonder who’s making the rules.  I’ve heard some American Natives complain about ‘Redskins’, but obviously since there’s a sports team with that name, it can’t possibly be offensive to anyone.

Ok, that one out of the way.

If it had been a man in the image, would anyone have written ‘morphed him to an oriental boy’?

He referred to the white girl in the picture as a girl too.  Yes, if the kid looked as young as that “woman” and he’s as old as me he might call him a “boy”.

I know a guy who knows Chinese and you don’t want to know all the derogitory names they have for foreigners that are perfectly acceptable.   So be quite gwailo.

                • Rich Wilson

I’m afraid that’s just not possible.  Dark people NEVER use derogatory language.

I don’t think you are getting it.   The Chinese know perfectly well that in their culture they always referred to us as the more polite saiyahn (Westerner) or  racist Gweilo(foreign ghost-devil).   Why should they be upset by oriental which just means easterner?   They weren’t a bunch of people on the New Left (Marxists) invented this offense.

It only “became offensive” in the ’90s with the PC crowd.    Meanwhile after the communist revolution in China it became more common to use Gweilo.  Ironic that Marxist were involved in devolution in one case and pseudo-elevation in the other.

No Redskin is not like Easterner, or Westerner at all.  It’s much more akin to Gweilo which refers to Europeans light skin, or the chinese word my friend told me, bazi, or big nose.

Why don’t you let the orientals stick up for themselves but then they have a lot of explaining to do.

The one downside to disqus (at least last I checked) is that you can’t subscribe to an individual post.  It’s all or nothing.  I once made the mistake of commenting on a fox news article and my inbox exploded.

EDIT: No, it doesn’t… how do I change my profile….
    EDIT: How about now?
EDIT: No. Is this even possible? Other people have it…. :(
EDIT: *grumble* Had to actually make a Disqus account instead of using my Google account. So far, not happy with the Disqus system. Maybe it’ll get better now.

    Hemant, I have some questions.

    1. The “Recent Comments” section does not seem to be changing or updating. Is that going to be fixed?

    2. With Disqus, it seems like you can sort by oldest and newest comments, but it still shows as a threaded discussion. So if a brand-new comment is a response to an earlier comment, you have to scroll through the entire comment section to find it. It doesn’t show up at the beginning or the end of the list.

    3. There used to be a feature in the comment box that let you bold and italicize and link to URLs. That feature no longer seems to be available. I can’t tell whether it’s possible to use these features anymore. If so, do you need to type out  the HTML each time? It seems like it would be pretty time c0nsuming.

    • http://annainca.blogspot.com/ Anna

I attempted to edit my previous comment just now, and it didn’t work.

I also tried to italicize a word in my comment (using HTML), and that didn’t  work, either.

Square brackets are not HTML. It’s a markup many forums use to translate into HTML (which uses pointy brackets). Allowing pure HTML is a bad, bad idea and usually not done because it opens up a site to all kinds of nasty attacks. At least if you don’t filter the tags used.

Edit: Using pointy brackets () works

      1) Recent Comments will be fixed shortly.

      2) Sorting by new comments will do just that, but they are sorting the main comments (not the responses to them), so if people responded to individual comments, they will be ignored in the sorting.

      3)  I’ll find out about the HTML tags.

I like this move.  Far too many humanist/atheist/skeptic blogs tend to preach to the choir (yeah, I know), but this may be one of the few times I’ve been to one that’s quite entrenched in unfriendly territory.  My only concern is one others have already voiced; other than the Featured Article link toward the bottom of the home page there doesn’t seem to be any way to casually get to this blog.

I’m liking how the new site is so far. Funny, now there are two blogs I read on Patheos- this one and Slacktivist, though I read that one mostly for Fred Clark’s page-by-page critiques of the Left Behind books.

Just couldn’t resist commenting on the new website, one question, can’t patheos do url masking so we don’t have redirect problems.

It looks awful on mobile browsers.

Also, will regulations on comments be stricter now that you’ve signed over editorial control to religious people?
