Agreed. I think this is just what his followers have turned it in to. 

Here’s the irony. According to the Bible, Jesus had a huge bone to pick with pharisees (and, if I’m not mistaken, they ultimately had him crucified). All that “by the book” stuff didn’t seem to fare too well with him. If you look at the conservative churches today and all the vile bullshit they spout, one might suggest that Jesus himself wouldn’t want anything to do with those people, either; and considering that they do it in his name, I’d think the guy would be utterly disgusted.

Not that it really matters, at the end of day.

First the Romans crucified Jesus despite the various gospels whitewashing this.  If any Jews had influence, it would be the Sadducees who controlled the Temple and had the most political influence not the Pharisees.  

Ah, the old Jesus good/Christianity bad meme. It’s not, however, something that’s generally borne out in the gospels, were Jesus is depicted doing all kinds of unsavoury things, e.g. cursing fig trees, encouraging one to hate their parents, being rude to his own mother, encouraging one to ‘turn the other cheek’ (a dangerous piece of advice if there ever was one) advocating castration and bodily mutilation, calling non-Jewish people ‘dogs’, destroying a swine-herder’s livelihood, wishing destruction on towns that don’t that don’t accept him and, of course, condemning people to hell (or Gehenna) for finding him and his ideas unconvincing.

Sure, there’s some good things attributed to him but seriously, don’t people read the bible?

I stand corrected. However, didn’t the priests have a big input over what should be done to Jesus?

You are correct.  The Romans did indeed crucify Jesus but it was the Pharisees that basically demanded it.  Pontius Pilate, the Roman, actually thought that Jesus was completely innocent, but the crowd (filled with Pharisees and their obsessive followers) was all but foaming at the mouth for his death, which in that system left him no choice but to crucify Jesus.

And the Sadducees as well, as Erp points out.

The thing is, the Pharisees weren’t all that influential during Jesus’s lifetime. They became a huge sect some decades later. In fact, the one gospel where the Pharisees are Jesus’s biggest enemies is held out as one of the biggest clues that the Gospels were written a long time after Jesus died.

Also a valid point, agreed. Jesus himself wasn’t nearly as perfect as many would like you to believe, but come on. All that shit we see on RightWingWatch and FSTDT?
