    And in the muzak playing while you wait is a lightly-jazzed,saccharine “Onward Christian Soldiers.”

  • And in the silence, made so much louder by the darkness, if you listen very carefully, attentively, you hear that it is not silence. You hear your own breathing, something you usually ignore. Behind that, the very faint high-pitched rush of the air on your eardrums, something you usually ignore. A momentary hint of your heartbeat, something you usually ignore. Then your listening reaches out beyond your own body, and you hear the distant murmur of traffic, something you usually ignore. Then the indistinct sound of a human voice. People must be walking by outside talking, something you usually ignore.  The words are indistinguishable, but the tone is clearly convivial.  Probably two friends going somewhere.  Friends, something you usually…

    Traffic. People. Friends. You are not alone, you are surrounded by opportunities to connect, to befriend, to help, be helped, to comfort, be comforted, to enjoy, and give joy. Get up, go out of the dark silent cell of your longing for “there must be something more,” and go outside. There is more, so much more, walking all around you, but they were something you usually ignored.

    “Good morning!”
