Rapper Gripp Releases Atheism-Themed Album

A rapper by the name of Marshall “Gripp” Gillson (also a 2009 graduate of Morehouse College) is independently releasing (PDF) an album today called Head in the Cloud.

Several of the singles from it have atheistic themes, including the song “The Future Goes“:

An excerpt from the lyrics (at the 1:14 mark):

So when we say that we’re better than you/ essentially that//
is to say that we pay attention to facts//
So come with us. We can teach you every attack//
the pseudoscientific mindset sets in a trap//
You will never go back/ Once you’re given the awe//
it’s grander than any caricature religion could draw//
I had a vision of all/ of us in a prison of straw men//
My mission is to make sure they ain’t winning this war//
So the battle lines are drawn in the sand/ ‘cos all that I am//
is a man/ shaping his logical thoughts to a plan/ Damn//
We need clear heads to get out of this mess//
So tell religious leaders step aside; it’s probably best/ Yes//

Who needs Gospel music when there’s Godless rapping to be spread?

Buy the album and keep this sort of thing going!

It’s amazing how the genre improves when every other word isn’t “fuck”.

We”ll be interviewing Gripp for MadArtLab soon!

Checked out his web site and downloaded his previous 3 online releases. I was going to purchase this from amazon for $8, but decided to pay an extra $4 for a signed CD so I can make my own mp3′s. I gave up on hip hop after the early 90′s, but thanks to this guy and Greyden Square (c’mon, who else samples Carl Sagan?), I’m slowly becoming more open to it – as long as the lyrics make sense and have meaning.

FINALLY, some great rap without “FUCK” or strong sexual content every five seconds.  Seriously make me appreciate the genre!

Once you get away from the hits and the gangsta crap, there’s a lot of really good stuff out there. Don’t judge the whole genre (and it’s an enormous one that links into several other genres and has several of its own subgenres) based on a few annoying artists.

That’s not how Mark 1:14 goes!:

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.

I do prefer this translation though.

The songs say “explicit” — disappointing for a parent of elementary school kids.

Yeah… some of them have cursing, and I am apparently not afforded the granularity to mark them individually. My only option was to call the whole album explicit…
