TheThinkingAtheist just put together this awesome promotional video for the Reason Rally!
Are you getting excited?
(I’ll take your silence as a resounding “Yes!”)
Hemant Mehta is the chair of Foundation Beyond Belief and a high school math teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. He began writing the Friendly Atheist blog in 2006. His latest book is called The Young Atheist's Survival Guide.
I was really sad thinking I wouldn’t be able to attend and I found out there are buses from various cities allowing for round trips over to D.C. at a fair price. Sent in a request for a stop in Charleston, WV, so I’m waiting on a response. If not probably I’ll just drive over to Huntington and take a bus from there– assuming my job gives me the okay to leave for a day. Now I can only hope that there are at least 40 other like-minded people in WV.
I am very excited. Taking just one paid vacation day off so going to be in D.C. that Friday-Sunday. Will be a fast trip but hopefully will be full of wonderful memories. Counting down the days! My husband, our friend from South Dakota, and I are also planning on gong to the friendly atheist meetup afterward too at that Mexican restaurant. I saw the event on Facebook.
I know it’s the way things are done these days, but I hate those fast cuts, out of focus images, and shaky-cam techniques.
Yes, I’m very excited. I’ll be meeting online friends in three-dimensional space, I’ll attend the American Humanist Association’s pre-Rally reception, the Rally itself on the Mall, the post-Rally Friendly Atheist dinner (?) and the American Atheists National Convention for the next two days after that. I’ll be exhausted but happy. If you see me, say hello!
Hemant, what is the latest on the post-Rally Friendly Atheist Dinner? Does it look like that will happen?
I found the event here and looks like it is happening. I hope it is anyways. That’ll be our trio’s plan after Reason Rally. https://www.facebook.com/events/268211529908085/
Thank you, Ashley, I’ll be there! Say hello.
I will be there with my son. We are so excited and would love to meet afterwards. Coming from Wichita, KS. I know of three others coming from Wichita as well.
I will be there with my husband and two kids … can’t wait! Unfortunately we have to be back in Buffalo Sunday morning, so we won’t make the post rally celebration. Enjoy the weekend everyone!
Can’t make it there but really want to see/hear what’s said. Will there be youtube videos of the rally afterwards?
My family of three will be there. Hemant- I know it is going to be super crowded, but I was wondering if you could recommend some symbol that your readers could wear if they wanted to be identified by other readers… maybe a red F pinned to a shirt sleeve or something similar? I would enjoy meeting other readers in person, but imagine we will just pass by each other without knowing who’s who.
I’m not sure! With that many people, how will we notice each other? Yellow shirts? Strange headgear? I’m open to suggestions…
maybe some type of headgear although I’m not sure what kind? Maybe you could add a Zazzle store or some other place and everyone can get Friendly Atheist hats. What do you think of that idea? I already have my shirt planned out: Wyoming Atheists shirt and the red A Dawkins pin.
Spaghetti strainer hats with an orange plastic bicycle flag attached to the top? That would go over well in the metro…
lol or maybe just ones that say Friendly Atheist on them and are a certain color
Let’s do something besides a shirt since a lot of people will be wearing their “Evil Little Thing” t-shirt to support Jessica.
agreed. i like a Friendly Atheist hat idea
The Unitarians have already claimed yellow shirts.. http://www.standingonthesideoflove.org/tag/reason-rally/
I cant wait for the Reason Rally in London. Wish you all the best for your rally.Lets get started, reason and logic must prevail.
i’ll going to be there! looking forward to it
I would go, but I’m worried about Christian terrorism. I know I shouldn’t bow to intimidation, but I’ve got young kids, I can’t take that kind of risk.
I hadn’t really thought about that. I hope that’s not happening … I can’t imagine it will but maybe?
Yeah, I hope I’m just being paranoid. I might even go after all. But if just one in a million of the sort of Christian who would call on their god to “smite” the rally is crazy enough to believe their god is calling them to be his agent to perform the smiting … well, that’s certainly more than one.
That had occurred to me, but I will not live in fear. Screw them.
It’s likely there will be some push back, but I expect only the street preacher types with their huge signs listing who’s going to hell. Take plenty of pictures, and we can have a laugh here after we all get back.
Already got my vacation time requested. I’ll be there.
I attended the 2002 Godless Americans’ March on Washington; about 2,500 people participated.
How many will be at the Reason Rally, almost ten years later?
I’m predicting about 20,000.
(Though over 50,000 would be nice….)
We’re taking a late honeymoon and attending the Reason Rally and the Nat’l Atheist convention! Haven’t been this excited in a while!
Got my plane tix from Albuquerque. Love Tim Minchin!!!
